I am using tinyportal 0.8.6, SMF 1.1 RC1 and the AmberTP theme, and I can't see the TPadmin links to edit blocks, articles etc. Please help.

Check so you have the tinyportal language files in the Default theme.

You should have

TPmodules.english.php
TPortal.english.php
TPortalAdmin.english.php

I think you missing the TPortalAdmin.english.php in your themes/default/languages/
