The shout box is a very popular feature on my club's web site but I wonder if there is a way to allow members to delete or edit their own shouts like the admins can.

Hello KK4HGY,

Welcome to the TinyPortal Support Site.

What you ask is possible but that doesn't mean that you would want to allow this.  First of all, tell me a little more about your site, specifically the following info we request in our Posting Guidelines ...

Link to my forum: http://www.yourdomain.com/forum/
SMF version: SMF ver. here
TP version: TP ver. here
Default Forum Language: Your Default Forum Language here
Theme name and version: Theme name here
Browser Name and Version: Browser name/version here
Mods installed: Mods listed here
Related Error messages: Error message here

Give us this information and then I will tell you how to do it, and why you may not want to allow it.

OK, you are currently using TinyPortal version 1.0 RC4 so the information I will detail here may not be available to you.  The reason for this is that I am not certain when we added the permissions I am going to tell you about.

First of all, let me tell you why you may not want to allow your members to do this.

This is important ▬▬►When you enable this permission, not only will your members be allowed to edit and delete their own shouts from the shoutbox, and those of any other member, but they will be allowed to access and change the Shoutbox settings on your site, including allowing urls to be posted in the Shoutbox.  Obviously, this is not something that every Admin would want to happen since there is a security risk to this, but it's your choice.  A better idea would be to create a special membergroup that you would allow to administer the Shoutbox on your site.  Maybe you could call that membergroup "Shoutbox Moderator" or something like that.  That way, you could select a couple of people that you trust enough to give this permission to.

So, how do you do it?  Go to this link on your site ▬▬► http://www.suwanneearc.org/index.php?action=admin;area=permissions

When you get there, you will see all of the membergroups you have created.  If you want to give every member who doesn't have a primary membergroup on your site this permission, and again, I don't recommend that, click the "Modify" link to the right of "Regular Members".  If you have instead created a special membergroup that will be allowed to administer the shoutbox, you would click the "Modify" link to the right of that new membergroup.  Once you do this, you will see all of the permissions that have been granted to that membergroup.  The first set of permissions on that page, right above "Use basic forum functionality", is "Manage TinyPortal".  Inside that set of permissions is one called "Manage Shoutbox".  If a group has this permission, they will be able to do all the things that I mentioned above.  However, even if they are able to edit and delete shouts, they will still not see the edit and delete icons to the right of their name after shouts.  Those icons ( & ) are reserved for actual Admins.

However, they will have a new "TinyPortal" menu item at the top that they can click.  When they click it, the next page they see will look like the first image attached to this post at the bottom.  They will have access to the Shoutbox Admin settings and can edit and delete shouts.  Remember though, they will also be able to change the settings for the shoutbox, as shown in the second image attached at the bottom of this post.

One more thing, if you don't see the "Manage Shoutbox" permission in Admin permissions, then you will have to uninstall TinyPortal version 1.0 RC4 and install the latest version, TinyPortal version 1.0 Final, but that is something you should do anyway.

No, giving all members complete control of the shout box does not sound like a very good idea.  Allowing members to edit and delete their own shouts does sound like a good idea though.  I guess that it too hard to do, otherwise it would have already been done.

Thanks for your help in this matter.

This is something we could think about for a future version but I believe you might be the first person who ever asked for it.  It's not a bad idea though.  If you feel strongly about it, you can add it to our bugtracker as a "Feature Request".  When you "Report Issue", be sure to mark it as a feature rather than a bug.  Here's the link --> http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?project=1
