When you delete a category with articles still inside, you get the reminder window, that only the category gets deleted, but any remaining articles gets moved to a "singles article" section.

I deleted a category and the articles inside went MIA. I found them in the database with still the category number that had. After editing the entries to a category number still present, the articles turned up again.

When ever you post a bug in the bugtracker, you need to fill in your software versions ,your setup, themes in use, other mods installed etc.
We have quite few versions to choose from now, so more info is needed.

sorry,

using latest smf 1.1.9 and TP 1 beta 4 with default Theme.

articles are mostly from a time when I had TP 0.98 installed if that makes any difference.

I believe an issue existed that had something to do with articles that were created in the 0983 version of TP and them not showing up. Ichbin may remember that but a search may also help.

Yes, definitely check and see if it occurs on new articles.

the article from the screenshot is from yesterday, entered with beta4 running.

Moved that article to the category "test" with id 790.
Deleted the category.
article vanishes from sight.
still shows in database as belonging to category 790 (see screenshot).

and just for the record, all my articles besides the one from this week (actually only 1 and the testing I do atm) where created with version 0.983.

tupsi,

Just out of curiosity and because I'm really interested in knowing the answer, what is the purpose of deleting a category that contains articles?  In other words, why would you want to or need to delete a category that contains articles?

There is none as far as I can imagine. At least not for me. But I stumbled over the bug and reported it, thats all from my side, because I think not everyone can just dig into their database and update the database tables with an easy sql statement, so they get shown again.

Because the category ID is auto increment you dont have a change to recover your articles in any other means, as you will not be able to get a category back with the correct category ID by simply recreating the just deleted category.

And I just reported it in the first place because the reminder window tells you that no article gets ever deleted when you delete a category. Well thats true in technically terms, it only gets lost currently, but I wouldnt go so far and call that "working as intended" :-)

I just stumbled over this bug, because I never used categories in the first place before v1 and just recently thought to give it a go to get my articles a bit more organised. But then the problems started which are reported elsewhere (wrong numbering of total posts, not correct number shown in categoryies on the front page, etc.)

It's good to get constructive feedback. The policy where I work is "If it's fitted, there, part of a system" it should work, or removed if not used.

You'd probably make a good Alpha Tester ;)

...I never said that

This was probably same bug as another bug around articles with no category.

TP v1.0 beta 5 will find any article without valid category ID's and collect them into the "uncategorised" group.
