 Hi,
I have just converted my database on my overunity.com
forum running SMF 1.1.6 / TP 0.983
to UTF-8 format and I still get strange characters in my browser
and my users too.

So I checked in Admin/server settings and there it still saying
under languages: English

Now I read that I must install the English_utf-8 language pack ?

But the download is broken:
http://www.simplemachines.org/download/index.php?thanks;filename=smf_1-1-6_english-utf8.zip

The download is zero bytes...

So where do I get the SMF UTF-8 fonts from to get rid
of the strange characters ?

Hmm,...
especially the German Umlauts and the
Apostroph in words like
don´t
can´t

do not show correct.

Is that because I did not yet install the
smf_1-1-6_english-utf8.zip
language pack ?

Or does it depend on my browser ?

I can choose many different language settings
in Firefox browser.
I guess one has to set FireFox also to UTF-8 ?

Now somebody gave me the tip, that the *tar.gz file was there and I downloaded this version for 1.1.6

Well I installed it but when I then changed in Admin/Server_Settings
to English_UTF-8
I got the following errors:

Notice: Undefined index: tp-admin2 in /....../overunity/Sources/Subs.php on line 2779

Notice: Undefined index: tp-admin5 in /....../overunity/Sources/Subs.php on line 2782

Also the strange characters are still there...

So I switched back in the
Admin/Server_Settings
to just :
English

So, how do I get now rid of the strange characters ?

Probably the conversion of the database was not successful
although it ran through with going to 100 %...hmmm...

What can I do now to get back the right characters ?

I also installed the TP English language utf-8 fonts package  for SMF .

So what is in this moment, using SMF 1.1.6 and TP 0.983 the
prefered database font format ?
English_UTF-8 or plain English ?

Lesmond

try clearing cache and try again, I got it downloaded at 26 bytes

hartiberlin

Well it must be 180 Kbytes and not 26 Bytes !

You can download the tar,gz version instead this can be downloaded...

But what about the questions about the UTF-8 Database format ?

You should go to SMF for that problem since its their forum.

Yes, I have posted there too, but did not get any answer there...
SoI hope here are also a few pros,
that know which format to use and how I can get rid
of these special characters.
Many thanks.

First off, you didnt have to change the DB to utf8, only the SMF and TP ( and offcourse if you have any other mods installed with their own language strings )

You need to use eather Default English ( what is set to default when you first install SMF ) And the same with TP.

As you didnt say what parts of your forum that show strange signs, i cant assist so much more.
If you use RSS feeds and they have strange signs in them, we cant do anything, not here and not SMF as the feed is what it is from the source you get it from.

If your site is set to English according to the info you have given, it's that language you have as default and the same as when you install SMF the first time.
