Stuck and fustrated

ive tryed installing tinyportal to smf for the ast few days and im not likkig that i keep getting the same error and have no idea how to fix it

An Error Has Occurred!
You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable! 

i have smf 1.1.4 is it not compatiable

It can be frustrating when things doesent work like they should.
You SMF is compatible but your server settings is not.
You need to make sure you have all the file and folder permissions set vorect before you install TP mod.
Make sure the packages folder have 755 or 777 depending on your server config, and also inside it, create a folder named temp and set it to have the same permissions, try the package manager again.
If you still have issues after that, you need to install TP manually to your SMF with help of the mod instructions in our docsection.

You need to have Cpanel where you can check the files you have on the server. CHMOD is the option to look for.
If you dont have Cpanel you can use any FTP software ( prefer Filezilla and it's free ) where you can see your files and folders and check the file permissions through there.
Om simplemachines.org you can read all about permissions and FTP software and how to use it in their documentation section.

ok i did download the file manager and its still not working and i was trying to install it by hand but still not workng i get a blank screen at the .php file

should i reinstall smf?

We can only support the portal here as this is what we do here on this site.
The problems you have with your pagagemanager are out of our support frame, so eather you need to seek help on your issues with the packagemanager from SMF or ask your host to help you sort the file and folder permissions so you can be the full owner of your content.
When you have sorted these issues, your welcome back here for more help regarding the TP install, but i think you will be good to go when you have solved the permission issues.
