Maybe their server is at the same NOC my server is at, which I think is in New Jersey. My server was down for about an hour today and i finally found out why when tech support could finally reply to my inquiries. This is what I got back:

QuoteHello,

We are really sorry for the inconvenience caused to you. There was an issue at the NOC. At approx 4:10PM EST, the main UPS did not switch properly indicated by early reports. Electricians and staff went to work on the matter and restored service at 5:35 EST. Now the server is up and fine.

If you are still having issues let us know.

Thank you.

I haven't had any problems since ... so far.

That would be a nice feature.

I wish there was a way to "unhook" the admin section from the Simple Machines site. When their site is down it takes about 10 to 20 times longer to load my main admin page.

dunno why but SM gets just TOO many downtimes and outages.
Half of their "News and Updates" board is filled with reasons for the downtimes.

I honestly think it is nothing but excuses. I run three servers - one west coast, two east coast. My total downtime for all three servers combined (other than downtime I caused) has been less than 15 minutes in the past year.

The downtime I cause is due to my habit of restarting them every 90 days. It takes about 2 minutes for them to recover. There were also some very minor blips due to OS upgrades.

So, with 525,600 minutes in a year, times three servers, equals 1,576,800 possible server operational minutes. For my logs to show a total downtime (both scheduled and unscheduled) of 47 minutes.........I'll let you figure out the uptime percentages.

Now, the year before, we had substantial downtime - each server was down for 90 minutes due to hardware upgrades. The rest pretty much mirrored what I reported in the last paragraph.

I also have a VPS which has seen less than 90 minutes of downtime in four years.

I am not a company running on a large scale, either. But I do know that excessive downtime is an indicator of poor quality - accepting it as a customer indicates you don't care.

You don't have all the specifics here. The site has undergone, and still is undergoing vital changes in the both layout and underlying scripts. Some of the downtime is simply due to upgrades and tests.

But i can assure you that the SMF team is indeed quite aware of any downtime.
