I really feel like a pest here! I need control over who can do what. To start with:

.. Only Admin to be able to start new topics (which all can read). Then:

.. A couple of threads that only Admin can post to (all can read)

.. A couple of threads that all can popst to (all can read)

I've looked at Tinyportal till my head hurts trying to figure how to do all this! I think it may require Child Boards, and I'd much prefer NOT to have to lock/unlock the Admin only post topics, cos it would be so easy to FORGET to relock!

Oh, dear, sorry this is so complicated...

Thankyou for helping!

Real quickly, as I'm formatting my computer as we speak. :)

Most of this is something you should read at SMF, but here's a quick pointer.

Admin > Boards > Modify the board you want > Select whether its read only or whatever setting you need.

If you want to control members separately you can Admin > Permissions > click on the member group and set the whole groups permissions. As for having only a couple of threads with this not really possible without locking them. You don't have to unlock them to post when you admin.

Thanks once again, IB! Wow, locking as you describe it will do the trick I think (and save me a lot of reworking my setup! I'm okay with most of the other things you mentioned). My only query is that 'Lock/Unlock' is showing at the bottom of your post with the Neptune-TP theme here - would this be a problem??

(Hmm... I try to keep right away from reformatting, but formatting may be okay... :D)
