Certain files which the manager of packages must modify are not accessible in writing. This must be changed by connecting you into ftp to change the rights of access to the files or to create files. Your information of connection ftp can be temporarily preserved out of mask of the manager of packages to carry out the operations properly.

What it is telling you is that the Package Manager needs you to change some SMF file and/or folder permissions for it to be able to run the install. To change the permissions you need to have FTP access to your SMF folder on the server hosting your site. When you can see the folders in your FTP program window right click on a folder, say 'Sources' and choose properties. You should see a string of 3 numbers and a table of check boxes. Most hosts allow you to install with the 755 setting, but you may need to set them to 777. To install a mod you will need to sort out Sources, Themes and its subfolders and Packages and its subfolders.
