I keep getting this: Stuff about files not being writable. I checked and all files are 755. They can not be 777 because my server does not allow it for security reasons. I was able to install the old tp with this chmod so please give me a different solution than chmoding the files.

Check the error log and it says this:
[04-Nov-2007 18:11:53] PHP Warning:  Zend Optimizer for PHP 4.4.x cannot be found (expected at '/usr/local/Zend/lib/Optimizer-3.0.1/php-4.4.x/ZendOptimizer.so') - try reinstalling the Zend Optimizer in Unknown on line 0
[04-Nov-2007 18:11:54] PHP Fatal error:  Call to undefined function:  tportal_version() in /home/thejungl/public_html/Sources/Load.php(1726) : eval()'d code on line 276

Checked around I can not find out how to fix this.

You'll need to ask your server to make them writable for you, if you cant do it yourself (777) via FTP
I have become comfortably numb!

Crip

Try going to Admin>>Packages>>Options>>check the box [Make all files writable] -- click>>Proceed.

..This does work in some cases.

I do not mean to be rude, but you do not have to chmod to 777 to install crap. The server is the one that runs these scripts so only the server needs to be able to write to them. I have installed numerous things on my server.

But for the hell of it I chmodded it to 777 and it did not change a thing.

It has to be something in the coding.

There it is. For some reason when updating the forum. The temp folder was deleted. SMF is not smart enough to notice  that there is no folder that it was trying to write to, hence the permission problem.

IchBin

Actually SMF creates and deletes the temp folder each time a mod is installed. If your server has some restrictions that don't allow the creation of the folder or allow it to chmod it writable, then you'll run into this problem.
