Hi guys i am neck deep in sugar Help please

hi guys i need help, my server was having problems so my host said they would give me a new server and i started to copy all the files as is, from the one server to the other,  the Database on the new server wouldnt allow the name or longer password that was used on the older server, so that was changed.
the problem i have now is, i dont know where i have to make any changes, i changed the info in Settings.php to reflect the new Database name and password. and now i get the following when my site comes up
Unknown system variable 'NAMES'
is there any other files i need to edit?

I suggest you download the repair_settings.php from simplemachines.org and upload it to your folder and then point your browser to it.
Follow the steps the file asks you to

just an update so if others have this problem.
my host put me on a server that had an older version of mysql v4.0.16 i did have v5.0.24 not i am on a new server with 5.0.24 and all works fine
