Does anyone know about why you have to get a lisence to put music Jukeboxes on your forum? I was told that having music for our members to listen too is really and truely illegal.

Any one want to explain this one?

Its not if you own the copyright to the music or its your own music, or you live in Russia :)

You could pay the copyright fees to the appropriate people,

You also need to have hugh pockets because it knocks a massive hole in your bandwidth :)

I don't know about you but when you are talking about Badwidth you have to understand something. If you offer your members music online in a jukebox, it doesn't mean that every member is going to use that option, and thus your bandwidth is not going to be worked that hard, besides I have never heard of a problem like this. Now I can understand if you have a thousand or more members and they are all using that, then there might be a question.

I think we need to learn about what consumes bandwidth, instead of always thinking about it.

ya know, I do feel that same way, and for some unknown reason I just feel that it shouldn't be that big of deal, but from what I have read, it is like rolling the dice, you can try it, but if someone wants to get you they will.

Not long ago I was watching a tech show and they had the RIAA and other organs in there talking about just this topic, and they said that if you broudcast music over the net, it is as illegal has downloading it, because it is possible for people to capture those feeds. However, there is a lot going on about this, because you really are not "sharing" your providing entertainment for your members, but again it all goes down to the fact that the RIAA is all hemped up over people doing this.

If you are at a party and you are playing music for your friends on your stero are you doing something illegal? Nope because you are in a privete controlled location. What? isn't our forums under control too? You see I want to have a jukebox, and want to place some music in there, but it all goes back to wheather or not it is illegal, and by law and how the law is written having something like that in your site is illegal, but one of the RIAA people did have this to say. "We know that people like to have background music in their sites now, and for us to spend the money to surf the web in search of these sites is fruitless, and it really isn't our main concern, right now our main concern is to stop illegal downloading of all kinds. Steaming music is at this time at the bottom of our list. If we happen to find a website that contains illegal streaming of copyright music we will press charges that is the chance you take".

So more or less what I think they are saying here is that, we can go ahead and put this muisc within our sites, but if you get caught your caught, if not then don't worry about it.

I also found that a lot of hosting companies are starting to feel the heat from these laws, and are being also sued for letting this happen. I feel that this is wrong, because wheather or not, no matter how you see it, it isn't any different then playing your music over your stero at home, or in your car, if a person hears it, isn't it the same thing?

That is silly Robert, you pay good money for your domain and should be able to put in/on it what ever you want.......bottom line!!

Try a jukebox and see :) Your right though, if nobody uses it it consumes none, but it soon mounts up if users do.
Also right about the hosts and mp3 - some will not allow mp3s to be stored in any shape or form.

Copyright is a difficult subject. But it really boils down to you buy the song, you have rights to listen to it, not your mates, not anyone else.  Its just accepted that you can play it at a party for your mates, it would be impossiable to inforce anyway, but it doesnt make it legal.

Same as half the other stuff on the net then :)

The thing here is if you transmit it you are "making it available to download" and that’s frowned upon, one day, sooner rather than later, someone will get prosecuted with it, it just wouldn’t be your lucky day if it was you
there would be much bigger fish to catch.

Your putting much more thought in to it than I ever did. My reasoning â€ââ,¬Å" when I had a jukebox - was I’m having a jukebox, **** em :)

Alright, but I still don't understand why you are so bugged about your bandwidth, I have never had to worry about this issue, and I am just now starting to hear people talk more about this. As for my Bandwidth> not worried at all, have plenty and don't have no need to pay for more. It doesn't cost me anymore or anyless to do what I am doing.

You also mentioned something about "Making it availble to download". Well I do see your point clearly, but that is not what we are talking about at all, first, if you are streaming your music through a program, you are not offering anyone to download that file, of course they could copy it easyly, but that would be like someone recording a song from the radio, which is also illegal, and so on.

I know this might sound out there, but like ou did say, it is all just a waste of time on their part, now I can see if you had a place where they could download the song or copywritten program, that is all together different. But putting it there for everyone to listen to? come on lets not get that greedy.

I 100% agree with you, and them some. I should be able to put what ever I want on my site, without having to worry about who is watching my back. Someone once said to me, "What if someone was to take one of your photos and place them into their website, what would you do"? Ok, first off I don't have to be told this, yes I understand the copy right laws and what they mean, if a person was to use one of my photos in their website, but didn't claim that it was their own, I really don't think I would have a problem with that.

You know what is really scary? What is scary is the fact that there are people out here who are so up on themselves that they would do something about it, just because they feel that no one should view their work or listen to their work. If you were not offering them a download of the song, and you are just offering them a chance to listen to the music, someone somewhere might want that song, or ablum, and thus you just made a sale of that product, and it didn't cost anything for placing an ad, for me it is free for the bands, but we also have to understand in most cases it isn't the band that is freaking out about this, it is the recording companies.
