Ok so I want to add a menu item that just points to the top level
of a category, I have a category that is just links to articles.
so I select
the type as category
then the name of the category.
but then the next box forces me to put some thing in it, " I don't want anything I just want a link to the
Category page. But no mater what is selected it defaults to the one on the top of the list..
then the next box is blank and I'm not sure what it does..
it saves it as a Category menu item but it goes to the top article on the list not to just the category..
no mater what article I select it goes the the top one.
Any help?

Not sure I follow your explanation srunyon1. To create at link to a category all you have to do is fill out the first box to give it a title, then select the radio button for category, then select the category from the top drop down. Click save and you're good to go. I've tested this, and all is working fine for me.

The articles drop down (the one below the top drop down for categories) is only to be used if you select the article link type.

The empty text box below the article drop down is for if you select the regular "link" type of link. That is where you put the full link in (http://www.google.com) etc.

Gave the first box a title, selected Category radio button, but Category is not an option in the Item drop down. All I have is General Articles, Portal Features then below another drop down -none-, then a blank box below that.

The "General Articles, Portal Features" are the categories. You are supposed to pick one in the dropdown. It doesn't say "category" it just lists the categories you are supposed to pick from.
