SMF version: SMF 1.1.12
TP version: TP 1.0 RC1

Hi guys,

IÃ,´ve been using a fairly old tinyportal version for years and had to delete und reinstall my whole board because of a broken modification. IÃ,´m running it on SMF 1.1.12 now and installed TP 1.0 RC 1.

IÃ,´m really impressed so far but after hours of searching IÃ,´m still missing the option to use new topics as articles. On my old board IÃ,´d simply click a button and the a short version of the first post of the topic would pop up on the front page. A read more button would then lead my users to the whole thread.

The only thing resambling this is the "promote to front page"-option I found, but I couldnÃ,´t figure out how itÃ,´s is working.

The question is, whether or not I still can use first posts of topics as articles on the front page?

Greets,

Ralf

I just found a second problem. When I saved my first article the german Umlaute where transformed to nonsense. Is there a workaround?

Hello crishnak,

Welcome to the TP Support Site.

In your TP Admin FrontPage Settings (Your Site + /index.php?action=tpadmin;sa=frontpage), you will see an option for "What to display on frontpage:".  You may select one of the following options ...
#Only forum-posts
*Selected topics only
#Forum-posts and articles - sorted on date
*Selected topics + articles
Only articles
Featured article with frontpanel
Frontpanel
Go directly to forum index
TP module

If you select one of the options above with the number sign (#) in front of it, then you will be able to scroll to the bottom of the FrontPage Settings and select from 1 to 5 Boards to show topics from.  These are basically known as News Boards.  You make this selection where it says "Display forum-posts on frontpage from:" and there are 5 dropdowns to select Boards on your site.  Right below that, you may limit the number of posts to show on the FrontPage and then, below that, you may limit the "Number of characters to display per forum-post:".  Be sure to save once you have made your selections.

If you want to use the "Promote to FrontPage" option, you must select one of the options shown above that has an asterisk (*) in front of it.  If you do this, any topic that you promote, from any board, will be shown on the FrontPage.

I hope that this was clear enough for you.  If not, LMK.

Oh, on your second problem, what is your default Forum Language?  German, German-utf8, or what?  Have you made copies of and translated the TP Language Files for your language?

I got the article-thing working now. Thanks a lot.

German utf 8 is the default board language and I didnÃ,´t make any changes to the TP-files. The really strange thing is that on some occasions TP doesnÃ,´t even save the full article but cuts it when the first Umlaut appears. Same goes for titles, except that it happens everytime. Could this be a problem of SMF 1.1.12, which is not officialy supported right now?

No it's a TP editor bug with foreign languages and special chars, be careful when editing, better not try to save a PHP atricle without a backup. SMF 2.0 RC3 and ISO installations have fewer problems. Unfortunately with SMF 1.1.x and UTF-8 installation the editor shows more problems.

Mhh...Sounds like I have to wait for a later release of TP. But till then I will keep on using topics as articles. Thanks again for the input.  O0

Probably not a bad idea.  Bloc is working on a few bugs in this version.  Feel free to browse our BugTracker to check the open issues at any time  --> http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?project=1
