I think this would be a good feature to have.

On my site, i don't just use Articles for News, i use them as standanlone pages (with no Intro) to display other things. I assume other people do that also?

So i think it would be good to have an option when you are creating an article/page, to have a extra option where it says ''Add button/tab on Navbar''.

So for example if i wanted to create a page to display wallpapers i have made and i didn't want to use an intro. Instead have a option to create new tab/button on the Nav.

then it would display like this

Home | Forum | Wallpapers | Help | Search.

I know there are some mods that do this, but they only give you the option to add 1 tab.

what do you think?

Also, how about Custom Portal Titles

Instead of having '' Website Name - [article Cat.] ''

Make the [article cat.] editable through the portal settings... so we can add things like e.g ''TinyPortal - Powerful Portal system for your SMF forum.''

This can help with SEO

similar to this mod http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2154

SN,

I'm not so sure that TinyPortal should be made to do this, because, as you say, other Mods do this.  I'm also not sure what the use of the extra title thing would be used for but it doesn't seem like it should be a TP function either.

To keep from getting too many tabs, I much prefer to use the menu system built into TinyPortal to accomplish much the same effect, without the extra tabs.

In any case, I will move your topic back up one level to the "Feedback" board, since Bloc hasn't yet accepted this as a proposed feature.

The title thing, will help with SEO for all tiny portal website.

As you may know now meta tags are not very effective anymore, and having a good title to your front page will help (this is recommend by google) because having things like  ''- index'' , ''- news'' , ''- <no name> sometimes'' etc... is not really any help and dose not really look good on good when you see '' Your Site - Index '' on a search engine.

As for the tabs, i can see your point in the built in menu and yes it is a good feature. Me personally i would like to option, to be able to do both.

Not all TP based sites use the built in menu, for various reasons (maybe doesn't fit in with there design).... I like to use DzinerStudio as an example, where they have their  'Team Page' as a Tab on the Nav and a standalone page for it give for a much more professional look. This could also help for people who want to add a tab for TP built in download page rather than having it on the portal

I doubt many people would create lots of tabs, if they do then its silly if you ask me.

Yes, there are '' Pages Mods '' that add Tabs and pages ( http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1311 , http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2209 )  but why use them when when you have TP installed?

If it is a question of '' why do this, if there are mods for it? ''... then i say why have things like a Shoutbox when there are mods for that? why have the the download system when there is a mod for that?

Im just thinking of ways to maybe to enhance TP for both the beginner and experienced user and make it a more complete CMS/Portal

i think variety is a good thing, maybe im wrong

bloc

Its a nice addition to TP, but only really useful for SMF 2.0 version, as the menu there is made inside Subs.php which TP can modify. In SMF 1.1.x the menus are all inside index.template, and every theme renders them => impossible to support every custom theme(and impossible to mod them for it.)

SN

Ah, i wasn't really thinking about 1.1.x... i only had 2.0 on my mind when i was thinking about this.

what do you think about a custom title or description field for the home page?

bloc

I like in fact the option to supply custom title, so i will add it for beta5.

The menu option i have to think about, but it does tie with the "Cat list" option of TP, where you specify a list of categoies to list on top, as a navigation option. Maybe its even better to simply use the main menu for all your designated categories, especially since its a dropdown menu and could have ALL the usual forum links inside just one main button.

The menu manager already allows you to simply select a link to a category. One could perhaps merge a menu there, with the main one.

I do that here on this site, manually though.

bloc

Come to think of it - maybe simply a option to add the category or even a page to the menu, should also exist within the editing screen of a page/category?
