Question about upgrading

I am thinking about using Tinyportal on my forum in the near future but I have a question about forum upgrades.

When upgrading to a newer version of SMF, say from 1.1.7 to 1.1.8 I often see people recommend uninstalling any mods. I was wondering how I would handle this if I was using Tinyportal. Would I have to uninstall Tinyportal before upgrading my SMF then reinstalling TP? And if I did, which in itself would be no big deal, would I lose all the settings, articles, on TP and have to redo everything?

Your settings are stored in your database and should not be changed when you upgrade SMF or TP.

On the uninstalling part; on small updates you can often get away without doing those mod uninstalls... however, it's always best to play it safe and do your updates by the 'book' including doing backup's of your database and uninstalling your Mods.

Thank you very much for your reply. Just one point of clarification. You say the settings are stored in the database. Does this mean that it would be possible to uninstall TP, do the forum upgrade, then reinstall TP and all the TP settings etc would still be there?

Further to my earlier question (I will post here so as not to make a new thread) I have a follow-up:

I run a gaming guild smf forum and have been monitoring the progress of Tinyportal for a long time, waiting for it to get close to completion. I have been playing around with the latest beta on a test site of mine and it seems really stable so I was thinking of running with it on my main forum.

My question is: when the "finished" version of TP is released, will I be able to upgrade to that from the beta via the package manager or will I have to uninstall and do a new installation?

The short answer is, "Yes".

The longer answer is that there is always the possibility that issues can arise, but generally speaking it's easy to fix any problems that do come up.
My advice? If you like TinyPortal then go ahead and start using it and when it comes time for an update we'll help you through any issues that you may have.
