Hi guys,

If you still have trouble installing Tiny Portal through the package manager even after reading the other stickies then what I have for you should help.

Here are some instructions to using the zip file below:
Only Use It If You Have NO Other SMF Mods Installed and You Haven't Made Any Modifications To Any SMF Files Yourself or you will lose these mods edits or your edits -- backup your files before beginning

1.) Extract the zip file on to your local computer
2.) Upload all files to your SMF Root (which is the folder with all the SSI.php and Settings.php in it.
3.) Run the file 'manual_tp_install.php' in your browser on your website.

AND IT WORKS!! BINGO :)

Manual install files below were entirely packaged by brianjw and the edits were made manually by brianjw to provide them here for you. :)

Brian, the package we have are for both manual and through the package.
When you install manually, you simply extract the same package and upload the files manually instead of run the zip through the package manager.

And you need to read the license agreement on SMF, as the source files you have added here in this package are theirs, we are not allowed to include any of the SMF files in any package we have, even if TP alters and use the same files.

What other sites have you added this package to ?

I will remove your package from here

brianjw

I haven't added the package anywhere else. I apologize; I don't read license agreements usually (maybe I should).
I just remember about 2 years ago, you guys had a package like this but maybe the SMF agreement changed in the last year and you can't do it any more. This just makes it alot easier than going through and manually editing the code when it is already done for you here.

Not only the folders for TP were added to my package, but also files that I modified for TP like SSI.php index.php etc.. just so others wouldn't have to have it.

Yes we did have the altered files for download, learning some time after that we were in violation of distribution which we certainly would not willingly do. So we took them down. It does suck to do the manual install some times I agree though. lol

brianjw

Ahh ok. Thanks for the clarification. But if it is against SMF's license to do that then how come it is okay to post various attached files on forums and modify them and repost them. This goes on many forums.

SmokyBlue

hmm maybe because it is considered helping, not re distribution, but then i havent a klue, smf does things their way ;)

I understand you wanted to make TinyPortal easier to install on a site (and it great you want to help promote TP) but the license agreement is there to protect the future development of SMF.

Much the same as TP and other professional software developers do, having an approved outlet for releasing the package is the best way to limit support issues and improve the product's reputation with 'official' distribution points. It allows the developer to state that the script starts at its origin with everything they developed, and nothing added in the mix that might cause unknown problems or unapproved edits (which, invariably, leads to hacked or malicious code that points back to the developer).

Again, I see that you had a noble goal in mind... and wish it could be done, but it simply can't.

brianjw

The reason I did it is because every time I try to install TP on any site it Times Out or returns an error because it timed out. I think it is because of the mod format being in a .mod file instead of .xml format. Could I convert TP into an XML file type as well to see if it would help or is there a license agreement against that here? :P

G6Cad

The timeout is more likly caused by a server setting, TP is quite large, and the time taken for the package manager to read and take action and make the changes are probably the reason your server shoot an error and the install doesent continue.

You can check the settings with the help of phpinfo file found in several posts here and also on SMF if you want to see how it looks

brianjw

Well; TP is fine on my server. But when I was with godaddy, they had issues. And the person I installed TP for has godaddy so it explains it then.
