TP is a portal mod for SMF.  It provides various portal type functions and thereby enhancing the SMF experience.  You can basically display various blocks with features in them like a mini calendar, gallery pictures, shoutbox, etc.  TP also provides a facility for uploads/downloads, articles that you have control over who can create/edit them as well as read (see) them, and you can display feature forum posts and articles on the frontpage, or a complete standalone page for the frontpage of your site.  There are numerous other capabilities, too many to list here.  Search around the docs for more info.
