I installed a fresh SMF 1.1.4, then I uploaded and tried to install tinyportal 0983.

It just doesn't install.

When I go to "Download Packages" it ways some permissions need to be changed, I enter my FTP, hit  Proceed, then the FTP box dialog goes away (I assume all is well?).

Then I go to Package Upload, select the file and hit "Upload".  All goes well.

Then it gives me the option to "Apply Mod".  I hit that.

(This is the output of ls -La from the server prior to hitting Apply Mod

I get this error message:
You cannot download or install new packages because the Package directory or one of the files in it are not writable.

That error message is just not true!

Help!

Often it is true because inside the package directory a temp directory is created each time a package is attempted to be installed. If you create a directory named temp and chmod it to 777 then install it may work. You also probably could have found this out if you search at SMF where many people seek support for SMF.

I have the latest version of SMF and am trying to install the TP mod/pacakge  This is the error I receive. What am I missing?

Error in Package Installation
At least one error was encountered during a test installation of this package. It is strongly recommended that you do not continue with installation unless you know what you are doing, and have made a backup very recently. This error may be caused by a conflict between the package you're trying to install and another package you have already installed, an error in the package, a package which requires another package that you don't have installed yet, or a package designed for another version of SMF.

Only line item that did not pass    Execute Modification     ./Themes/default/index.template.php     Test failed

giojohn please do not post a new question to a Topic and most especially do not hijack someone else's Topic.

A search will give you your answer.

Argh!

I hate Thread Hijackers!

Where do I put the /temp folder?

/path/to/site/Packages/temp/
or other path?

Where?

osprey

I got it installed this way:
1. I did a clean install of everything on the site
2. I chown the site
3. I chmod 777 the site
What things do I need to Un-chmod 777 now?

G6Cad

Actually none, you can leave all but the settings.php and settings_bak.php to use 777 permissions.
Set the settings.php files to 644, but the rest can stay 777

Not sure what you are telling me "Hijack" some ones topic. I had what I thought a completely different error, and I did search the error maybe I did not use the correct KEY word  but I took  the time to look.  Excuse me if you think I hijacked ...what did I hijack ?

Zetan

If you don't know what a Thread Hijack is.. fair enough.
But it's considered rude to tack your unrelated error to the end of a support topic which is still in progress.

If you search for the error you have, and don't find a result, then you should start a new topic and be descriptive in the topic title and the content of your post.
