Best thing you can do is setup a test site and see what you are capable of. A test site would require you to setup SMF in another folder and then install TinyPortal.

Can I set up a test forum using my current domain?

Here's the current directory of our forum >> mysite/public_ftp/forum

Can I add a folder >> mysite/public_ftp/test site/forum

and install another smf on the that test site folder?

wouldnt that create some problems or errors in our current forum?

Yes, you can and it's very much advised you do have a test site if you have space.
