Its easy to read into something on the internet. And I think both of you managed to do that just now. :) Well, I can say one thing for sure. The package manager is so well built I haven't seen a problem with it personally. In fact, every problem I've ever seen has come down to a setting on the server that restricts the package manager from being able to do its job.
You don't need to follow the links in that topic. But if you read through it you'll find some suggestions or work arounds that people have posted to make it work.

Thanks for the reassurance - half the problem I have is that I'm not sure where the fault is likely to lie. With a car you can hear a rattle or something, so when you follow it back to the source the solution is apparent. With forum faults, I don't know where to start, so I tend to try everything until I find something that works. Alternatively, I try everything, and then give up.

One thing I wondered was whether TP might have to be updated at the same time, otherwise there might be compatibility issues. That's why I came here, because you guys are usually very knowledgeable, as well as being pleasant and helpful.

I'll do as you said and work my way through the thread. Thanks again :)

If you update SMF, it's not always needed to update TP. It really depend what the SMF update was all about and how it was made.
But updating TP is to prefer if there have been changes in the DB.
Updating TP is quite easy, most of the times it's enough to just download the TP package and extract the files and upload them/overwrite the old ones.
Then point the browser to the manual_tp_install.php so it check through the DB and make the changes (if any)

If you updated SMF with all fresh files, you will have to add the TP strings to the SMF files as they got lost when you upgraded SMF.

Easy way is to always try the package manager first as it does all the work for you, but if it fail, you have to go with the manuall install.

I think I know at least what part of the problem was. My hosts have set default permissions to 644, so anything I upload is not writable until I go into Cpanel and change the permissions to 777. So I'm guessing the package manager uploads the files and then cannot open them.

One of the SMF support crew updated SMF for me, and I've now manually updated TP by editing all the files as G6's link told me to do.

Thanks for the help, all :)

Hello, I'm having a bit of trouble installing TP on SMF 1.1.4.

I successfully uploaded the TP package onto SMF, but when I try to apply the package, I get this error:
   Type     Action     Description
1.    Extract Tree    ./Themes
2.    Extract Tree    ./Sources
3.    Extract Tree    ./tp-downloads
4.    Extract Tree    ./tp-images
5.    Extract Tree    ./FCKeditor
6.    Extract Tree    ./wysiwyg
7.    Execute Code    tp_install.php
8.    Execute Modification    ./index.php    Test failed
9.    Execute Modification    .Sources/Load.php    Test successful
10.    Execute Modification    .Themes/default/index.template.php    Test failed

18.    Execute Modification    .Sources/Profile.php    Test successful
19.    Execute Modification    ./SSI.php    Test successful

I tried chmoding both the index.php and index.template.php files to 777, but to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Ken.

If your permissions are correct and TinyPortal can not be installed then you may need to do a manual install, it's easy to do... just take your time and read the Docs carefully.

If you are getting errors on just the 1 file, you can continue, but you will need to follow the Manual Install instructions and make the edits to the file which has the error.

You seem to have 2 errors, it should be fine to install and edit both those files following the sections in the docs which refer to those files.

By all means, don't forget to use the search. This error has been covered many, many times.
