More features in DL section

The download area is nice, but all it gives you are icons and the download link. How about something looking a bit more like paFileDB?

You can add in your own icons for show in the download section.
Just upload the images you want in to the TP _download/icon folder and they will show up there.
In the next release, you will also be able to upload images and make descriptions with a built in editor there.

I have tried to upload to this folder, but it is owned by user '99', and no other users have write access to the folder. This is on a shared UNIX package, so I am unable to 'CHOWN' the folder to me.

Any other ways of adding a new icon?

That is something you need to contact your host about, it's them that need to change the settings to allowe SMF and TP to be the owners of the files (you)
