Do you download them using FTP client? If so, which one do you use?

IchBin

Filezilla is my FTP program of choice.

I use my cpanel to backup my whole site and download the file; and then I used ZIP Genius to unzip the tarball file and bob's ur uncle.

I use FileZilla, as well and always have a copy of all my files on my comp. I manually edit the files on my comp. with conText and manually upload them via FTP. So, I always have the file on my comp. originally, anyway.

I make back ups of my database via cPanel and then, less regularly make back ups of my entire account via cPanel.

Hmm, thanks! I'll try out FileZilla, 'cos the current ones I've been using (CoreFTP and SmartFTP) don't work well for me. For e.g. the downloading is always slow, and it can't upload files from the sub-sub-directory onwards for SmartFTP.

I use WS FTP Pro and have done for many years.

One thing to do with any FTP for downloading/uploading board files is to add php, css and sql file name extensions to the ASCII mode list. A lot of my early SMF problems disappeared when I did that, I was getting data corruption in binary mode.

Filezilla is the one I use. Tried many others, but this seems to be the best I've tried so far. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Filezilla and or Total Commander for FTP, WS FTP Pro in the past.

Host PHPMyAdmin for database.

My new host has a utility, zip and backup, which seems interesting, especially for themes that have many small files.

I have this on my VPS account. It's good.
