Hello Everyone. I am running Themis 1.1 I think it is on an old forum of mine. Is there any way I can download the original theme somewhere as a ZIP file that I used to install this theme from in 2009?

Cheers...

bloc

Themis was the 3 theme I made ever..so its close to 15 years old lol. IMHO you should look for both newer themes and upgrade to SMF 2.0.

I do not have the original anymore I am afraid.

Wow, amazing, a reply from the legend, bloc himself. Never expected that. So nice to hear from you!

Well, thank you anyway. It is OK. I don't really need the original ZIP of that theme I guess. The site is still running fine and I really just wanted the original for a backup. But I haven't updated the site to 2.0 because it is not really an important forum anymore. It is not really active and I just leave it there as an archive for all the old posts on the site, which people might want to read. So I think I will just leave it there with your old theme, the 3rd one you ever made. It is very nice and I still enjoy it. Thank you!

Can't remember Themis at all, must have been before my time.  I'm intrigued as to what it looks like now.

SimpleMachinist, got a screetshot or link please?

It is running here on this forum of mine at www.photographythailand.com/Forum/index.php, but I have made some custom coding changes to it along the way so it doesn't quite look like the original, but it is close.

SimpleMachinist

I have actually been running it on that site since March 2006, so exactly 10 years this month.

Thanks, it's good to see some of bloc's early work. And to see just how much he progressed to todays standards. Boy how things have changed.

I'm guessing you'll be upgrading to a newer version of SMF at some point, and I'm sure you'll be able to find a theme along those lines should you want to stick with it.  It's a clean looking theme.  ;)

Forgot to say, you've been running that a year longer than I've been using Tinyportal. My site has been running since October 20, 2007 and still only has 319 members lol..  :-[

Thanks. Yes, I also like the clean look of the bloc theme and why I chose it back then. I probably wont upgrade to 2.0 though as that forum is pretty much just an inactive forum and just archive now of old posts for people searching for information in Google. So my intent is really just to leave it there as is.

At the moment I am more focused on blogging and building other sites in Wordpress.

Don't feel bad. Lots of the site members on my forum are spammer registrations. I have deleted many, but still a lot exist. The forum really hasn't had any regular activity in at least 3-4 years either. I used to drive it a bit and we had a core group of about 30-40 people who would also meet up sometimes, but eventually it just kind of lost its momentum. Most of the registered members were never even active. I think forums these days are very hard to develop in general because of things like Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, etc. In Thailand there is also a large, general English language forum for foreigners, which covers all sorts of topics and has become quite popular as well.

You will need to upgrade to SMF 2.0 if your host upgrades to php 5.5 and you start to get errors. Also SMF 1.1 is no longer getting security updates so your forum could be at risk for hacking if security issues are found.

Thank you for that. Understood and noted.

SimpleMachinist

By the way, hopefully harder to exploit my forum now that I also disabled new user registrations recently. That is now one less way that a hacker can drop some malicious code into the system.

illori

that does not stop someone from getting access if your host is not secure and someone else on your server gets hacked and gets access to your files as a result.

The theme is quite like the original :) although it was bit more green lol. Probably too much green at that time.

I think its simplicity and table-based look was in tune with the SMF default 1.1 theme, which i also made.

But ironically it was my second theme made ever, Helios, with its rounded corners that led my later themes being more "curved"..and in the end, to default SMF 2.0 theme "Curve" which i made in 2008. Helios/Themis was 2005 stuff I think.

I am abit disappointed that 2.1 default theme didn't improve..its basically a rehash of Curve theme, with a few more "boxed" items. It doesn't reflect the new look on the net at all IMHO. But thats just my opinion of course. At least I am working on getting out some of my new ideas, and they do have a more modern style. Though I leave it to others to be the judge of that of course. :)

no offense to those that put effort into curve2, but they are not really themers IMO [including myself for some changes]. we dont really have a themer on the SMF team to put their touch on the theme. we have people that think they know how to create themes.

Nice little history lesson there bloc.  8)  Love hearing how these things came about.  I do agree with you about Curve2 though, it's nice, but I was expecting a more modern look. Perhaps they're saving that for SMF3.

Your Helios theme was way advanced for its time, still one of my favourite looking themes actually.  I used to run it on my CC site, but removed most of the themes to make it easier to maintain.

I am not saying everyone is "useless" though :) ..Antechinus was onboard afaik? ..but from my time on the team before 2010 it was increasingly clear that the notion that all team members were equal in determining what this and that should look like. Which was a bit strange, as I didn't question whether some core function should be done this way or not. It worked when I was present - the Curve  them is almost pixel-perfect my intial idea - but I fear it changed after I left. So while there may be people that could, they may have not been allowed.

Be that as it may, you are probably correct about no-one truly "into themes" atm in the team. Creating the code, stacking up well known layouts etc. isn't that hard..the real hard part is coming up with that mix of innovative idea and user-friendly operation. Lord knows I been down road many times over the years lol, some worked out great, others not so much. in the default theme corner I think I managed to pull off a mix between new and familar..both NDT's were received at first with "no, this cannot work." from the users.

Its 2016 now. 2008 were the Curve year lol, and Core(the 1.1 NDT) were 2006 year. Curve2 was around 2012-2013 I think..or maybe abit later. 2016 SHOULD be the year it changed, but I fear it will not be..

Boy I could write lots here..but at least one thing I want to repeat(I have prob. written it before lol) and that is that it IMO was a mistake to further make default theme have so many dependencies. Anyone wanting to start fresh on a theme will have just as much hard time doing it with 2.1 as they have with 2.0, even more due to many decisions that really is theme related, be put into sources. I mean..how are they going to promote fresh looking themes if they take away the encouragement to do so?

A long time ago(a very long time lol) the famous [Unknown] acknowleded that themes were really a corner of its own, that Sources should stop dictating what themes could do. That stuck with me, and I think prob. was one of the reasons I could do Curve so drastically different from core. Which I am pretty sure he didn't quite like lol. Themes are not evil, trusting them to best make use of the data given, is the best way to be sure they thrive and be many(..) :)..not be given strict directions on how to look. (examples, gif files in sources, ready-cooked strings for links etc., css that only appear FROM default for different browsers, javascript libraries that cannot be changed without hacking Sources..and so on)

Sorry for the lenghty reply.

Helios was a bold experiment, for me too lol. At the time(2005) SMF users were into boxy table-based stuff and here I made something that had lots of graphics with round corners and strange gradients. And it was DARK. I was def. one of the "out here" theme makers then haha. But that was my door in really, if I couldn't do themes that way, I saw no reason doing them at all. So, sink or survive then. Today i prob. am a bit more laid-back, simplification has been on my mind the later years. Though graphic themes might pick up again, the Wordpress market already does it, although it goes about in making sure it works across all mediums - which is crucial now.
