Has anyone here ever changed servers and had to move the database?
How do you move the database to the new server? :o
look at this (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=83.0;sort=subject) on SMF
I did and it didn't make much sense to me, thanks
Try this this (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=15252.0) Topic it is 25 page long though
I will read it thanks
Just export your DB (same as full backup of your DB ) and download it to your local PC
Then when you have moved the complete content from your first server to the other server you import the DB again to your new database.
You do all things with the DB through PhPMyadmin.
Then download the repair_settings.php from Simplemachines.org /Download/Toools section and upload it to your new server, and point your browser to the file. Follow the instructions and thats about it :)
also check if ur host provides "site to site" transfer
it requires u to give ur new host admin passwords and stuff - but the stuff gets transferred nearly automatically lol
all u have to do is go in and run the repairsettings.php file
I am looking to move my forum to a different directory in the same site - I did a test on this, uploaded all new RC3 and TP96, then downloaded the database and uploaded to the new mysql, then used the repair. But it moved the errors along with it - I just want to technically start fresh and just move the boards, posts, members, and the permissions that go with them. Is that possible??
Just moved three sites to a diffrent server and it took some time, but was not that hard really.
Did by the steps i wrote erlier in this thread :)
pvcblue, you can export individual tables if you want, but you have to do them one at a time through phpMyAdmin. Or, you can go into the new database and empty out the tables that you don't want any more.
I have done it a couple of times and often use an old backup to create a test site. I use these Database Utilities (http://www.tinyportal.net/smf/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item281)
QuoteThree files in the zip, create_backup.php, restore_backup.php and rename.php. Unzip and create a new folder called backups and ftp the create and rename files to your site. Backup d/b files will be created in the backups folder. If you need to use rename.php, open the file, insert your details and ftp it to your site. Use your browser to run the file.
They were created by [UNKNOWN] and will make a backup copy of all the tables with the specified table prefix, no 2mb or 8mb limits as with phpMyAdmin.
If you are going to ftp files around make sure that php, sql and css files are transfered in ASCII mode otherwise you can get data corruption and useless backups.

Thanks for that advice, the thought of it is scary, lol. I would hate to lose my database.
The voice of experience, once I stopped assuming auto mode would take care of it and made the changes to my FTP client I haven't had problems.
Ok - myphpadmin wont do what I need, it downloads the files seperately but won't upload them to the new database!
you mean you cant find the place to import them, or it times out while doing it (or gives some other error?)
No it would not import D1 setting/info into D2 - said already has that table or such - doesn't matter - I renamed the folder I have the forum in, and have bigger problems now, can't get some of the settings to recognize the new directory, did the repair_settings.php, but tpdlsettings and others won't switch........???????
Things you need to do manually when you move places on the server or to another server where repair_settings.php can fail out is for the themes
Admin/Themes and Layout/Themes and Settings/ make sure all the urls for the themes and images are set correct so it fetches from the correct paths
Also in Admin/Configuration/Server Settings, make sure the values are correct there to, especially if you are running on the same server but from another folder there.

I did all the dear and nothing - still the same probs, I am going to overlay the original files and start from scratch........ lots of work ahead!! ARGH!
ok uploaded all fresh file - reinstalled tp and still ame thing the downloads setting still goes to old folder, http://pvcblue.com/forum , instead of new http://www.pvcblue.com/smurftalk . now what??????????
Just saw that I to have the same problem.
When i click the FTP link in the download manager, i get a 404 page and "you dont have the permission to access"
Will see if i can solve it some how
Well I was able to fix my problem - I went into myphpadmin and downloaded the smf_tp_dlmanager file - opened it and saw the values were still set to the old url of the forum. I replaced teh values, saved it, deleted the table from the database, and uploaded the "fix" table and ALL works fine now!! YEA!!!
