the "Recent Topics" box

After learning how SMF's sorting works - I'm concerned with the functionality of the "Recent Topics" box.

The order of the "Recent Topics" box isn't really recent topics - it's recent COMMENTS to topics. 

I'd like to restrict updates to this box to "New" topics and only new topics from a particular category of boards.

I don't want community chit-chat and comments to some year old post filling up the Recent Topics box on the home page.

I'm looking at all the code and I'll see what I can do myself - but I thought I would throw this out there for discussion as most of you are way more versed in SMF than I am.
