looking for a powerful program

yet fairly inexpensive for taking photos and making a dvd slideshow with background music and added effects. there are tons out there, but i was hoping there were some that people here have used and recommend. i am just needing to add pictures for now, but might want to add video at some point just not necessary for this current project.  thanks for the help.
