Title: Is TP right for me?
Post by: Xycose on October 23, 2006, 03:29:54 AM
Not exactly sure where to post this, so I just went ahead and did it here and figured it could always be moved.

Basicly this is what I am looking for, I had TP installed a while ago when someone told me it was perfect for what I was loooking for then, which it wasn't, but then he assured me in a future update it would be. Anyways, My need's have changed a bit now, it's on a different website anyways now too

What I need -
-Front page, blog type still overall forum theme/intergration, I know TP does that part but not sure if it works like a blog. I can not remember.
-Be able to make articles, still in the forum theme and such which I know this part IS possible with TP
-An link tree for article catogories, which TP did NOT have last time I tried it at least.
-Be able to set certain users to make posts on the main page and articles other wise or make a membergroup that is allowed too.(Non admins/Mods)

What is a Bonus-
-Some sort of download manager, that you can put quick summerys to everything, set it so you need to log in to download, and is searchable? Not nessasary for me, but would be a large improvment over the script im using for downloads.(It's easy, and was easy for me to make, which is why i use it, but its not very extensive, I just upload to the /downloads/ folder via FTP then it makes a link tree to direct downloads to them all.
-Being able to turn off all other features of TP if wanted.

Can TP do these things? Is it planned in the future?

Thanks!

[Edit: OK, This is definatly the wrong section, I clicked the wrong place, or read it wrong.....theme support, What was I thinking? Move please  ;D]

Hmmm.. For some reason my post decided not to show up. I certinaly hope i pressed "Post" after typing it, heh, anyways

-Does it create an "Articles" tab on the menu at the top of the forum for the link tree to the articles? I can Probablly add the tab myself and link it to the link tree if its on a seperate page which i hope?

-Does a post on the front page nessicaly have to be from a post on the forum?

-Can I set it so certian people can make front page posts and other article posts?(With them having no admin acess)

Are there any planned releases soon? When aproxmiatly will 1.1 be out? or is there even a aproxmiation yet? I have other projects I can work on, so it's best for me to wait for another version to be released then work on it then. What is the current latest verion of TP? .95 or .96? The banner says Tiny Portal .95 but in the news it says .96 was released. Is this not final or something?

Thanks!

[Edit: Thanks for moving the topic  :up: ]

yup it creates a nice lil breadcrumbs tree like link at the top

like here i have a an article on my page: (notice the link train under the menu at the top--> the Bloc Zone | TP Team | Akulion)
http://www.tinyportal.net/smf/index.php?page=55

also u can have many categories and sub categories

u cant make posts on the front page except if they are from the forum really - cos it takes posts from the forums and displays it there if you want it to.

the current version is .96 it is quite recent so bloc hasnt had the chance to change the banner yet im guessing

1.1 will be out when its ready and only block can say when it will be ready - bu u can check up its features on the Roadmap article here:
http://www.tinyportal.net/smf/index.php?page=14

best thing is for u to set up a test site and try it out if u can :up: nothing beats trying out something :D

also be sure to have a look at this:
http://www.tinyportal.net/smf/index.php?topic=4983.0

its a collection of really useful stuff - like codes and scripts which can be easily used with TP to even further make your page more beautiful and powerful :up:

Is there a way that users can choose weather when they go to the index of the site that they go to the "homepage" or forum index/home whatever? I know i can disable it compolety, but I would like to have a page like it, just I know some users would like to go directly to the forum when they type in my domain, but they would still like to be able to see the homepage, and some others would like to go directly to the homepage.

No, this is not possible as is, you can eather set your forum to start with the frontpage just like ths site does, or have the forum as startpage.
If you have your forum set to frontpage they have to manage and find the forum button if they want to go there  ;)

They can go straight to the forum if they use the right URL. Something like

http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php?action=forum

assuming that your SMF/TP combination is at yourdomain.com. The link I have in my browser when I come here is the "Read new" link -- http://www.tinyportal.net/smf/index.php?action=unread -- because I know that's the first thing I want to do whenever I come to this site.

You could even have a redirect through your webhost so that if someone went to "forums.yourdomain.com" it would redirect them to "www.yourdomain.com/index.php?action=forum". There's lots of ways to get what you want. :)

I have another question, and thanks so far guys.

I didn't want to use any of the sideblocks originally, and just wanted an "Articles" tab at the normal SMF menu at the top, that would take you to a link tree type thing for the articles, but I think I might use the the "blocks" and only on the left side. I'm getting everything how i want it before i even try to put it live on my site, to make sure i can.

What I'm having trouble with is the "sitemap" block. IT has the "downloads" and the "demo article" which i changed to just Articles but what i want to do is have Articles come up first
Articles
Downloads

Currently it is
Downloads
Articles
and i cant find a way to change it the other way around. Any help?

Also, I made another test account on the test forum, make a new member group, set that member group to be allowed to "submit" articles, and i put that member into the membergroup, I can't find where to submit the articles though that member though?

Quotewhat i want to do is have Articles come up first
You can alter TPortalBlocks.template.php. Look for function TPortal_sitemap(). You'll probably want to move all of the first ones to the end. So, cut
if($context['TPortal']['show_download']=='1')
echo '<li><a class="sitemap_header' , $current=='dl' ? '_active' : '' , '" href="'.$scripturl.'?action=tpmod;dl"><img src="',$settings['images_url'],'/tpmodule2.gif" border="0" alt="" /> '.$txt['tp-dldownloads'].'</a></li>';

if($context['TPortal']['show_gallery']=='1')
echo '<li><a class="sitemap_header' , $current=='show' ? '_active' : '' , '" href="'.$scripturl.'?action=tpmod;show"><img src="',$settings['images_url'],'/tpmodule2.gif" border="0" alt="" /> '.$txt['tp-admin15'].'</a></li>';
if($context['TPortal']['show_linkmanager']=='1')
echo '<li><a class="sitemap_header' , $current=='link' ? '_active' : '' , '" href="'.$scripturl.'?action=tpmod;link"><img src="',$settings['images_url'],'/tpmodule2.gif" border="0" alt="" /> '.$txt['tp-admin13'].'</a></li>';
if($context['TPortal']['show_teampage']=='1')
echo '<li><a class="sitemap_header' , $current=='team' ? '_active' : '' , '" href="'.$scripturl.'?action=tpmod;team"><img src="',$settings['images_url'],'/tpmodule2.gif" border="0" alt="" /> '.$txt['tp-admin17'].'</a></li>';

and paste it just before

         echo '
         </ul>

QuoteI can't find where to submit the articles though that member though?
The submit article link is in the Admin Tools block.
