I have searched through topics and can’t quite find a direct answer to this question.
After backing up and before upgrading, should I uninstall all mods, including my current Tiny Portal?
I am at SMF1.1RC2 and TP .8.6
If I removed my current TP, won’t I lose all settings and blocks? Should I individually saved the files in the php blocks and re-do it after the upgrade?
Would anyone like to do it for me if I make a donation? ;)
Just create a backup of your database, then install the new RC3 in a new location then add all your mods.
import your saved database, then run the upgrade files and your done...
Your settings and blocks won't go away if you uninstall TP. They'll all still be in the database.
It's always a good idea to backup your database before doing anything major anyway, so I would do that.
Then, uninstall your mods, including TP. Upgrade to RC3. Install TP. Upgrade TP. Install your other mods(although some of them might not work with RC3 and may need to be upgraded). You should be all right, but you have your database backed up, just in case.
That's what I did and I didn't have any problem.
You dont have to remove anything when you upgrade. the upgrade replace the old files with new ones, all content will be saved in the database just like JPDeni say, when you have done the upgrade, just run the installation of the mods again and they will be the same if the mods are updated for 1.1rc3
Okay, will do. Thanks
All in all is the following process recommended for SMF1.1RC2+TP0.8.6?
Backup DB.
Upgrade to RC3
(Manually) Upgrade to TP 0.9.5
Please note that I don't mention anything about removing any mods/TP.
Thats about it yes :)
But you can install TP through the package manager even if it's an upgrade, you dont have to go the manual way if the manager work :)
I had problems when I upgraded to RC3 with TP still installed, so I would recommend that you uninstall TP and other mods, too, just to be safe before you upgrade to SMF.
It only takes a minute or two to click the buttons and links to uninstall the mods and then install them again after the upgrade. It takes a whole lot longer to try to figure out what went wrong if something doesn't work right.
I didn't read this in time to uninstalled TP or the other mods and it is mess up and I have no idea where to begin to fixed it.
At first I got the page for proceeding but when I did, it failed. Now I can't get to that page, I get error loading to databases.
I wish I hadn't tried it, I just do not know how to fixed it on my own! I'll upload my saved file and forget upgrading.
I had to reinstall my backup database and reinstall SMF1.1RC2 and TP.86 in order to get back to where I had been. Then I uninstalled TP, upgraded SMF and reinstalled TP and it's working great.
I have never installed a backup, would I just upload the files like I did the upgrade using my upload program?
I admit I am near tears with this, things were going so good on the forum before.
Well that doesn't work. The files are there I can see them in my cpanel, all are set with permissions granted, should I delete the TP files? I am at a lost at what I need to do to fixed this.
Let's start with just the files. Maybe the database is okay and you won't have to worry about it.
Here's what I would do. Delete everything to do with TP and SMF from your directory. Then do a full install of SMF RC2 -- the version you already had. (If it sees that there is already stuff in the database, it won't overwrite it.) Then install (through the package manager) TP.86. At this point, you should be back to where you were.
If things are working, uninstall TP, upgrade SMF through the package manager and upgrade TP through the package manager.
Cross your fingers.
If this doesn't work, then we'll need to look at the database backup, which I've never done before, so we'll have to walk through the steps together. :)
Another option just occurred to me. You could contact your web host and ask them to install the most recent backup they made of your files. Most hosts make backups at least once a day.
I'll try your first suggestion and see.
I am having my host to restore for me. I am not attempting this again, I'll pay someone to do it for me. :'(
When they have restored it, i can help you upgrade your forum and portal for you marion.
Send the accounts from your
FTP/Cpanel
Database
Admin login to your forum in a PM and i will make the upgrades for you.
No more tears and take a cup of tea and relax.
They want to know where my backup is stored, do they want the one that I have saved to my computer that I downloaded through the admin section of my forum? And if so, how do I get it to them? Should I create a file in my cpanel and upload to that?
Maybe, they do not have a backup to my site? :-\
Yes, you can send them the file through your cpanel.
Just upload the file to a temp folder or similar, then give them the url to the folder.
EG: http://yourdomain.com/temp/database.rar or what you havenamed the file to.
Okay, I can do that.
My host is having a difficult time restoring. It seems the backup I did this morning was giving a 404 error and they asked if I had another backup. Well I have an August 31, 06 backup but it was a very small file and I don't think it was complete. The only other one I had was for June, 06, but that one had errors and couldn't be use.
He said he saw I had a full site backup or he could restore the databases and attempt to fix it from ssh, whatever that is. I ask that he restore the databases first and if that didn't work to go ahead with a full site backup. I'm not sure how old that backup is, so I might lose a lot!
Oh well!
It depends on how often they make the backups, my host makes a full site backup every day, so if the server or my self breakes it, i will only loose one day at the most in what i had there. So keep your fingers crossed :)

recently i did an upgrade for someone
I backed up their DB just in case but never needed it.
Their site was same config as urs .86+rc2
All I did was upload all RC3 files
Install RC3 (yup I didnt upgrade I installed - it told me mid way some tables already exist thats all)
Accessed the forum - it was same as always (with all the old posts etc....) and no TP (since rc3 files replaced all old ones)
Uploaded and installed new tp via package manager
That was all
At this point my forum is lost. I think doing as aku suggests is the only answer. I have nothing to lose. The only thing my host could get back for me was the news section, when I log in, the screen goes blank.
I don't think they have a back up. I'll ask agin in case they misunderstood me.
Marian.

I have the information that you requested ready to PM you, I know know what this is,
Admin account <--- ?.
If they are able to restore, that will overwrite everything in my databases, right? Then maybe you can have an easier time of it.
Thank all of you for your help. I knew I shouldn't have tried this aone.

Okay, they have completed their restore, it did not help. I still only have one page, clicking a link goes to a blank page. G6. I am PMing you the info.
Send the PM and the last backup of you DB you have if the DB they put up is bad.
When i upgrade, you wont loose any content from the boards or articles, members nothing, every thing will be just the same, just newer files for the forum and portal software.
Im on my way to the store right now, but i will fix this for you as soon as i come home again. About an hour, in the mean time, please dont change or do anything to your files or folders, leave them as is now.
Okay, that backup is on the server already, I will PM you the location, and name of the file.
G6 be sure to check her existing DB before attempting an import
It could be her DB is still intact for all we know
I think they are intact, because he did tell me that he backup the databases before he did a restore. And he had restored them whent he restore of the backup failed.
The DB was there and intact, but not accessable for some reason i still dont know why.
But i manage to get to export it to my local machine, then removed the old one, then uploaded all the files from my testsite, got permission errors on all files, deleted it again, uploaded a fresh set of a full install 1.1rc3 (that i had a hard time find, case SMF was down, and when they came back, no file were there as usuall), Uploaded all the new files again, run the install, it was there :) Uploaded the full package of TP, ran the install, worked like a charm :)
Then went in, deleted the db from the fresh install, imported the old DB, ran the install files from both SMF and TP and now it's up and running with all content there :)
This was by far the hardest support i have done so far, but i fixed it, the tea taste GREAT right now :D
Marian, ou have a working upgraded forum now, both SMF and TP are updated to the latest versions, all you other mods are gone, so those you want there you have to install again, but really check that they are working with the never versions before you install them.
The themes you have will work, but give errors, so eather uninstall them and just leave the default themes (Core, babylon, Yabbsee) and then install new themes that works with your setup now, I have 19 themes for SMF 1.1rc3 and TP V.095 in my download section, you can also find them in Crips board here in the forum.
Remove all the old themes and folders from your forum before you install new ones, that way you keep your dirs clean and easy to maintain there :)
Thanks G6 and I have shown my appreciation with a donation for Dennis, which I was going to do anyway next week, but I decided to put it on my credit card and make the donation now, and thanks again.Ã, I was so sure everything was gone and I should have never attempted this on my own, next time I won't.Ã, I know what my limitations are, LOL.
Now, to find new themes!Ã, :) :) :) :) :) :)
Yes thank You marian :)
I just saw the mail, I searched for your name on my forum so i can set you in the guardian angel group, but i couldent find a Marian there ???
I didn't register for an account, but I'll go do that now.Ã, I want to post the poem/story about Autumn there.Ã, Plus I will be able to check out themes for my site.
edit; I can not register, the code is always wrong even when I listen to it. I get that error. If you like register me and send my the password. My email is;
