Reminder: I high lighted #4, so if you just converted another theme it will not count.

Rules:

1. Must be a TinyPortal Theme
2. Theme must be Half life or any of its Mod Games (i.e Counter Strike, Day Of Defeat, Garys Mod, etc)
3. All themes will be released to public free of charge on the first day of voting.
4. Theme's must be own work or have proper credits for images and permissions from original owner.
5. Theme's must be submitted by 15 Sept 2006. At this time we will go into voting by the Tinyportal Community for 10 days.
6. There must be at least 5 Designers willing to participate.
7. Designers must register by 1 Sept 2006 stating they are participating.
8. One Entry per person
9. Must submit PSD with theme.

I wont vote untill darkman gets his theme up. If his sites down i can give him admin access to one of my testforums for him to use.

Dammit. My forum went bogus and the css scrwed up and it wouldn't save. It went all blank. I'm uploading a backup of the theme right now.

Due you mean for the Downloads? I have know Idea...but they need to turn them ASAP. That way people can't change stuff during voting.

I think it's free to release, But when the theme is posted and the voting has started, no more changes are to be made in the theme or layoit, so why not release it so every one can see it live on their forums :)

I liked Jpgs aswell , I also really liked Xarcells and Blocs but i eventually made up my mind and voted for jpgs ( i just couldnt wait untill darkman submitted his ) in fact i liked all of them lmao.

Well, I've looked at all the demo sites, and I must say that every single one of these is looking very nice!

Some of my comments:
Xarcell: Excellent job!  I love the multiple layout selection at the top of the screen.  This is a very sweet feature!  And each of them look great!
Bloc: Very clean, Very fluid, I love the way this theme flows for both frontpage and forum areas!  Great use of the background images fade-in/out!
Stormlrd: Great job on the block framing graphics!  Those are very sweet, and very original!  Love the popup menu system as well!
Jpg: I love the way you did your background (behind the frontpage/forum frame).  It blends the rest of the site well.  I also love your use of the graphic in the titlebars.  Classic!
kusanar: I love your header design, clean, simple, functional.  I also love the way you did your titlebar graphics (pearing above the actual bar).  Very nicely done!
Darkman: {waiting to see it here}

Whoever is in charge of sending out that email for this, should just email me again once Darkman has his theme up. I will wait to vote.

I love the range of backgrounds and the colour combo's, top stuff, maybe not suited for my site but greta job to all just the same!  I wish I had the skills to this sort of thing!!

he means destine designes didnt originally design those gfx's which isnt surprising as i didnt get my renders from there anyway.

I agree, Its no ones fault but mine that my theme is incomplete but I love the work that everyone has done and will complete my theme anyway even if disqualified. I think youve done an excellent job everyone and I for one think its been a great friendly competition and darkman dont take it so personal.

As far as the contest goes...All I have seen has been stunning. Really creative, and it just goes to show how much talent is out there...

On the whole... I think these contests are a terrific Idea... and something that should continue. A great way to let the creativity flow and interaction happen.

I think i have been mentioned in the first post. So i am posting.
I did give permission to Darkman to convert my Nuke theme. I asked him not to alter copyrights. And i think he has kept his word.

[Million things going through my head...]

Darkman, I believe the issue is not so much that you did or did not get permission for modification of another theme.  I believe the issue is one of originality.  I think you did a great job on converting a phpNuke theme over for SMF/TP.  I think the fact that it looks so close to the original makes it appear as though you are basically submitting someone else's work for a contest that was started with some originality in mind.

The rules did state you could use things from another author with permission, but I think it was implied that you would add your own work to it.  I think the wording of the rule probably could have been done better, but everyone else pretty much understood it.

The other issue I believe has to do with submittal time.  The rules do clearly state that your work needs to be submitted by 15 September.  Whether you are in a different time zone or not, you did not submit on the 15th in any timezone on the planet.  You showed up late on the 16th in many locations and even the 17th in your own timezone.  I think that even if it weren't done, had you submitted it on time, the other issue of originality would have been overlooked for the voting purposes.  However, a combination of the two is what got you into trouble.

My advice is to just chalk it up as a learning experience for the next time (as someone else already mentioned).  It is not the end of the world, and hopefully not the end of contests on TinyPortal.

ΨPorkΨ - I think you did a good job on setting up the contest, however, I would say that you probably have learned something here today as well.  The next contest you might want to clarify rules even to a larger extent just so no unfortunate mishaps come up such as the issues here.  Another learning experience.  Personally, I probably wouldn't have done even half as well as you did.

For all the contestants - I think you all did a great job on all the themes.  I hope that you are all encouraged and motivated to perform more of these contests because I believe it is a great event for the TinyPortal community.

I agree.  There have been some unfortunate circumstances, not the least of which TinyPortal was down.  All of the circumstances should be taken into consideration for the next time.  Perhaps a server issue should force a reschedule of due dates extending at least 24 hours from the time the server is accessable again.

Of course any change to that schedule should likewise change events further down the timeline of the schedule in a like manner.

Darkman, I really wish you use your talent to create something from the scratch sometimes - its not that hard and you already have much inspiration in the themes you already have done/converted. Everyone starts with copying stuff - to learn and get better. But you made many themes, most have been copies - imho its time to start with your own stuff. Or else you will be forever having comments like this - either from me or others, because basically you show OTHER peoples work off as your own - and the credit isn't always the first thing you mention. This is for me personally a much bigger deal than the theme's quality. The online world is a goldmind of stuff and its so easy to just borrow here and there. About the time-thing, well, everyone was jumbled because of the downtime, including myself. As you have read its no biggie, I also said I will announce the topic again when you came with your theme entry...if its ok with Pork? ..then I will do that now.

aww I didn't see this compertition... (Right as I was doing a Counter Strike theme for something else :P ). Ah well, had a look at all and voted on what I liked the most.

I just wanted to say a few things.

Yes, posts were made at my site, posts about the competition, themes were posted.
But with all due respect, It wasent me or my site that announced the competition, not my site that holds the contest, so even if TP as down, my site have nothing to do with the contest in any way.

Porky run the contest, Porky have said for a month in the other thread about the rules, what day the contest starts, and what rules the themes had to follow in order for the contest to even exist.
It's bad that TP went down the day it was suposed to be the start of the contest, But even if it was down, my site or any post there regarding this contest have nothing to do with the contest what so ever.
We were a few that jumped over to familjegodis ( as we usually do when TP is down) and had some support and a chitchat there to just be together, thats about it, I havent started the contest on my site, but a didnt say anything about the themes screenshots posted there eather.

It's to sad that lyes about who done what and when, and frankly, this could have been fun, but now it's just a lot of sadness and whining and no fun at all.

The rules to me were clear
Your own creation, Posted the 15th at latest, Darkman posted his theme on my site yes, but even if he did, it took 30+ hours before it got posted here, over a day more in any timezone just as Thurnok my TP brother stated.
All the whining is tiresome, you go on to this like it's a life and death matter, Why not just see the fun of it.
I dont thing the other members here will think this is a fun thing or fun reading at all.
Do what you do, be proud of the work done, stand tall for your OWN creativity, And most of all, Stop whining like babies, that's not going to leed any where in like, 16 yers old or not, whipe your own but and stand for your actions. ( The mother in me came out )

I voted for Xarcell's Half Life theme!! I was having a toss between Xarcell's and kusana's because both looked great. Then on Xarcell's, I noticed up the top the icons. I clicked on them and guess what?!? SKIN CHANGES!! Woot!! That's how it got my vote.

The headers are great, and I love the style changes. The main colours are good and balanced well, however aside from the headers, there is nothing graphically interesting - just plain boxes.

Bloc's:
A well balanced theme (to be expected of course). I personally think it's a bit tame however. Still nice though :)

StormLtd's:
Not bad overall, but some of the graphics are rough. I don't like those borders either, but otherwise it's quite nice. Would be nice to see in non-orange colours.

thanks for the critique, I always love ppl that take the time to properly critique pros and cons of what they are voting/viewing/commiting on.

This is the type of thing I'd like to see more of from everyone as this is the type of post that inspires us to do better rather than leaving us in the dark about what we did wrong.

Xarcell: Your themes got my vote simply because to me they presented a complete persona of the valve games and i absolutely loved the graphics. Critique: As a smf user to me the forum was too heavily based on default theme I think, it could have used more customizations.

Bloc: Your theme design and icons were spotlessley clean and beautiful and woud have definately voted for you but didnt because in my opinion this whole competition was about the game and to me personally your theme failed to present me the 'game feel and look'

Stormlord: your theme was very nice and i absoutely loved the unique menu and the scrolling downloads box at the bottom - very innovative stuff. But the reason I didnt vote for you was because the theme itself gives a very 'heavy' appearance and a bulky look which is inconsistent with the actual game look and feel in my opinion.

jpg: it was a very nice theme but to be honest a bit too simple for my taste and also at first impression did not give me a fel for the game at all.

Kusanar: your theme was simple but nice, your block header graphics are very nice, but the center blocks icons are very rough around the edges and that was the first thing that caught my eye and it quickly lost it professional look.

For the icon I know, I've remade it but I'll put it on the theme at the end of the vote, the 26. I start also to make more icons for the rest of the theme. And last thing, if you look the css, each block can have it's own header. I've planned to make a header for each but it was too short so only 2 are on the theme for the contest. The others will come after.

Hey Bloc I noticed on your themethat you didn't make the Site map transparent...if you put it in the top right of the blocks it covers the picture in the back..

Bloc there is something wrong with your PSD files I downloaded them but they come up with an error when you try to unzip or open them.

Not only what Bloc said, but this site has so much information being updated on a daily basis, for users that only check the site once or twice a week, they get overloaded with new posts to read and its easy to simply skip over a bunch.

I barely looked at the Chit Chat board for the first month I was a member here at TP.  So I can certainly relate to a small turnout, not to mention it has only been a couple days.  Give it a week, then see how it fares.

I have to be honest, what has happened here has bothered me alot.

I lost alot of sleep to be sure that I finish on time. I practically did 7 themes instead of 1. I also wanna tweak my themes, especially TF2 and Portal ones. But i thought we agreed no tweaking until voting is finished. So I haven't touched them...

To be completely honest, I dunno if I'm ever gonna particpate in another contest like this one. Sorry guys...

I agree with Xarcell. Once the vote is up, participants should stop tweaking their themes. If they want to continue working on it, they can set up another test board.

Thats what I thought as well there would be no updateing to the theme that people where voting on until the voting was over. ??? This takes away from everyone that did complete there work.....

On page 19 and you guys are now saying this?........ This was discussed way back in the thread. You should have resolved this before it came this far. By reading the comments made it looked to be ok that updating was fine for Storm. He OPENLY SAID that we would not update if you guys all said so.

Considering who's winning I wouldn't be complaining or threatening to not participate as you're only doing a disservice to the community and not yourself because there are some great themes here. Why wait until its over to say something? Thats crazy!

Everyone needs to chalk this one up as lessons learned. Next time there will have to be more specific rules. I don't see any reason to start getting upset about this. Besides, after looking at the votes after Storms "updates" it's not having any affect on the winner.

I think we should let all of this go to rest.

I think we can all agree that things could have been done a bit better, but who knew before this competition started that it would turn out this way?  I doubt anyone even had a clue this could happen.  Let's all be good sportsmans about it and just decide that it's a test run for future competitions.

We take the lessons learned here during this round, and apply changes to improve it for next time.  Nothing is ever easy when it comes to so many different mindsets, and making all those different mindsets happy is a very difficult task.  It's a juggling act.  But sometimes you just have to compromise in the spirit of good sportsmanship and help make it as good an event as it can be under the circumstances.

Please don't anyone be discouraged from future events, because these are certainly beneficial to the entire community.  Your perseverance in helping with SMF/TP on all the other things - updates, bug fixes, alpha testing, beta testing, suggestions, etc. - should apply just as much here, don't you agree?

Let's take a step back, take a deep breath, and say "next time it will be better".

How about this if I hit any prize spots i forfeit the money to the next in line. I don't ask to disqualify Storm or anyone else. My post was only to notice that when you start a contest with rules, you have to follow thoses rules. You don't help anyone when you go through rules. Porky may think "that was bad, everyone did what they want not listening to my rules", other participants may think "I worked all nights to be able to respect rules and someone else is just taking 3 days more to finish"...
Some years ago, we did some contests in my site. The firsts ones, we had many participants...some gave their work late and we had this pb...after 4 contests, there was only 1 or 2 participants.

So, just take my previous post for next contests. If your theme is not finished in time, give it like it is and work on another test board. I've allready made lot of change in my theme, I'll put them on my theme only at the end of the vote.

Last thing, thanks Porky for this contest. I'll be there for next one as I need training in design. I'm mainly a developer and I started as designer 2 month ago in a company. Thoses contests allow me to know if my work is good

You point back to page 2, well let me point you to this post where Storm specifically asked whether he should continue or not. THIS IS WHEN YOU SHOULD HAVE SPOKE UP! At this point nobody said they didn't want him to continue. Even Bloc said it was OK.
