Title: Bad install - Fatal Errors
Post by: niblem on August 20, 2006, 02:28:35 AM
Hello everyone and support personnel.
I realize this has probably been beat into the ground millions of times but I am absolutely stuck and frustrated.

I have installed SMF 1.1 RC2 on my web server.  I then tried to install TP using the packages manager.  At first this worked just fine and everything was great until I realize small errors on the page such as no forum button on top bar, only text saying "forum index" and etc.  Also, when I had "go directly to forum index" checked, nothing showed on the frontpage except the news post.  I was using BABYLON theme and thought that this may be the problem or I may have searched/replace the code wrong in the 5 files you must edit.

Anyways, 10 hours later I am getting fatal errors and I can no longer install TP with package manager (once I click apply mod, the internet freezes and will not progress in Firefox OR IE6)  I get page will not display.

I have searched these forums multiple times but cannot find an exact fix for my issues and have tried many things.  If anyone has advice please send it my way.  Thanks so much.

So, just to make sure I'm straight on what you've done.... You have installed TP? Is it working on the default theme? If its working on the default theme its as simple as adding the required code to the babylon theme. However, if its not working in the default theme your installation is not finished. If you can't run it through the package manager and get it working, you will have to try the manual install route.

I originally had TP installed just fine.  I have since uninstalled it to try and fix the errors I was getting (forum index text instead of button, forums wouldn't display on frontpage).  Now, when I have the default theme on, I goto package manager > upload TP > apply mod = nothing.  The browser locks up and Firefox wants me to open "index.php" and IE6 says page cannot be displayed.  I had no issues with package manager when it worked at first.

I am afraid that I may have corrupted some of the default files (such as the 5 that you have to modify)

I have not tried the manual install yet either.

On a side note, when on default theme, when I try to enter admin password it says
QuoteSession verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again.
But it will not let me log out.  Im at a lose of what to do.

At this point i suggest you install a fresh copy of SMF and then go for TP again.
TP will only work on the default theme of SMF until you have added the code needed for the other themes that come with SMF 1.1rc2

And if you dont want to go with a fresh install, you can download the same package of SMF that you installed, upload and overwrite the existing ones so you get fresh files, then download repair_settings.php from SMF forums download section, upload it to your forum root and point your browser to the file.
That will make the DB connect to your SMF forum setup again.
Then you eather go with manuall install pakage of TP, upload all the files from the manual install pakage, read the text file in the package on what code you need to add manually to what files in SMF. then run the install_tp.php from your browser.
It will say that you have existing tables, so it will only repair the tales if nessesary and connect TP to your DB.

That sounds like a great idea G6, but will I lose my current forum setup/settings/posts I already have with that method?

I have made a backup of the forums using the backup utility in the admin panel, how would I go about upload that zip file I already created via the backup utility?

If you just replace the files with new ones and then run the repair_settings.php you will not loose any content
The DB will stay as is.
Same with TP, replase the files and then run the install_tp.php and it will just "connect" the files ans actions to the DB, it will say that you have the tables there, but it will not replace it.

Yep, as long as you only change these files, you will not lose any information in the database. It will not be touched by reuploading the SMF / TP files.

I uploaded the SMF 1.1 RC2 files into my /forum directory via FTP and then placed repair_settings.php into the /forum directory.

When I open this page I get..
QuoteSome settings are not being shown because the MySQL connection information is incorrect.

But, when I change this info in repair_settings it will not let me click "save settings" because...
QuoteSettings.php cannot be written to by your webserver. Please modify the permissions on this file to allow write access.

I'm not sure what to do here, I never had to chmod settings.php before..

Did you try? Open your ftp and right click on the Settings.php file and chmod it to 777 until you are done. Then chmod it back to 666.

Ok, I have chmod'd it and everything looks good so far.

Now, lets say I want to use a different theme besides the default, all I have to do is edit the index.template.php file to what tp_modifications.txt recommends?  Or can I just replace the theme's index.template.php with the one in default theme?

(Theme in question is Aero79)
Title: Re: Bad install - Fatal Errors

Aero79 is already converted to work with TP. You just have to find the correct download for your version. :) Here's a link to that one.

http://www.tinyportal.net/smf/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item201

You'll find that Themes are posted in a few different places. Some in the downloads manager which is where I pointed you to. And also in the forum where people like Crip have converted or Bloc and Storm who have made their own themes.

Just make sure you download the right version of SMF+TP theme based on your SMF version.

Ok, I am using your version and I am having the same issue.

With "Go directly to forum index" is check in frontpage tab of tinyportal settings, nothing but my news post is showing.  I also have no forum button along the top with home, profile, admin, etc.

I am back to where I was originally, having these same issues of things not appearing correctly.

Basically, what I'm trying to get at, all I have to do now to get the "Babylon" theme to work with TP is replace the index.template.php with the modifications?

(EDIT)Small correction.  I see now that the "chat" button is what directs you towards the forums.(EDIT)

Can you upload your index.template.php file? I know the problem you're having and I think I can fix it for you.

Hope this helps.

Also, do you know if I can get the default "Babylon" theme to work with TP and how would I go by doing that?

I tried to change a couple things. How does it looks now?

Can I just use your file and replace the one in forums/themes/babylon directory for it to work with that theme?

Just to update you: your file still doesn't enable my forums on the index/frontpage

Babylon? Well this is the one I use...

Babylon is a theme that comes default with SMF (Default-Core, Babylon, YaBB original)

Babylon is the theme I would like to use but I am having no luck making it work with TP

On another note:  Do I need to run the install.php for SMF now that I replaced all those files?

niblem, did you try his index.template.php file he just posted above you? You don't need to run any install.php file unless you need to change things.

Yea, I am using his file now.

Everything looks good, except forums do not appear when you click on the "home" button, only my news post and no articles have been submitted yet.  I also have no button to navigate to the forums.

www.globalaviationnetwork.org/forum (http://www.globalaviationnetwork.org/forum)

Thats strange. I saw a forum button there right next to the home button.

Yea, forgot to update you.

I now have it set through TP to use "Frontpage Blocks" instead of "Go directly to forum index"

This now adds the forum button, but still no forums appear on the page until you click the button, only text that says "Global Aviation Forums" at the top, center block.

It will only "GO directly to forum index" if its set in your frontpage settings to do so. If you have Display articles then thats what it will do instead of go to your forum.

What I want to see is when I come to www.globalaviationnetwork.org/forum, I would like the forums to be displayed in the middle, and the TinyPortal working correctly displaying blocks on the left and right.

Here are screenshots of what I see with "frontpage blocks" set in TP settings.

If you have "go directly to forum" check as your frontpage option why do you need a forum button? With that option set your home IS your forum.

As for the blocks, check each block (edit them) and make sure the member groups are selected that you want to view them. So if you are logged out and you cannot see them as a guest you will need to check them to see if guests are allowed to view the block in the "edit block" page.

So there is no way to have all my forums displayed on the frontpage?

The entire forum board will show on frontpage if you choose the settings to "go directly to frontpage"
And you wont have the forum button there, just the home,as the forum are the "home" when you have made that choise.

Exactly.  I want my forums to be on the frontpage like you are saying, but they are not showing up with "go directly to forum index" checked.  Nothing I have tried will have all my forum catgories displayed on the frontpage.  Only articles and news posts, but no forums.  There is a screenshot a couple posts up to show you what I see.

Send in PM so you dont get 200 admins there to night  ;)

Yes, I can do that.

I have another question that needs attention and I think I'll be set to go.

When I'm logged in as an admin, I cannot see the right-side TP blocks (recent posts, ventrilo server).  I do see the left and center, but I have to logout as a guest or use the test member account to see the right-side blocks, any suggestions?

As admin you should be able to see all blocks, but check the permissions for them and see if is set wrong anyway. hard to say when it's admin things that dont show, admins should see all at all times.

Yea, it is very odd.

I made the test admin account for you and logged in with it and voila, I saw both right and left blocks.  Makes -no- sense why default admin account cannot see right sided blocks.  Oh well.  Check your PM MrsG6.

I just wanted to give a HUGE thank you to Mrs G6 for going above and beyond the call of duty!  When I thought all was lost with my forums and had exhausted all I knew, she came through.  I gave her an admin account and off she went and turned my forums back on the straight and narrow path.  Thank you SO much for all your hard work and the guys here at Global Aviation thank you too! :)

*Until my next problem arises!  :idiot2:*

Before the next issue i hope you DO make a complete backup to both forum AND DB;)
Next time i might not be able to save your things if everything goes nuts there  :knuppel2:

And always keep in mind what version of SMF you are using then you want to install mods and other things there, so you get the correct things that will work with your forum ;)

Thank you for the post, this is just the things that make it so fun to help out when we get credits for it :)
Thank you niblem

PS! Did you find the right blocks when you clicked the upshrink button ;)
