Half Life Theme Contest

Rules:

1. Must be a TinyPortal Theme
2. Theme must be Half life or any of its Mod Games (i.e Counter Strike, Day Of Defeat, Garys Mod, etc)
3. All themes will be released to public free of charge on the first day of voting.
4. Theme's must be own work or have proper credits for images and permissions from origional owner
5. Theme's must be submitted by 15 Sept 2006. At this time we will go into voting by the Tinyportal Community for 10 days.
6. There must be at least 5 Designers willing to participate.
7. Designers must register by 1 Sept 2006 stating they are participating.
8. One Entry per person
9. Must submit PSD with theme.

OK everyone is asking what do we get if I win. Well I thought about it and I am giving up $150.00 via payed through paypal for your hard work
But remember If we don't get at least 5 designers to participate the contest will not happen. And you ask why have this contest? Well its simple
some people might not be able to afford to have someone design them a nice gaming theme so I want them to be able to get free of charge, but I don't
want the designers to go unnoticed either for there hard work as well but there can only be one winner.

Any links to hl2 fansite kits?  Often game publishers have kits for fan site creation.  I can't seem to find one.

I'm working on some buttons for a future CS:S or HL2 theme and I want some opinions.  I'm wondering if they are too hard to read.  :o

They are supposed to look like an lcd readout, like on a camera or ipod or something.  Take a look and let me know if they are trash or not, before I do the whole set.

If it's a competition, i suggest you keep what you are doing for your self and then when YOU are satisfyed with the work, you precent it for us ;)

They are a little hard to read due to the glare you made on them

What the hell Im in, Im gonna brush up on my flash I got some killer Ideas from one Im working on for darth on my test site. Bloc I hope your In as well thats 3 of us maybe darkman, sloopz, or several others I cant think right this second will do something I think it would be real cool. But Im only doing a TP version lol you know me. :D

It wasn't deleted, it was locked. While its not so important on this site, it is over there. Just post it in Help wanted section for example.

This is a good way to promote theme development. The biggest bang for the buck. :P

I hope to see more contests in the future.

Pork I gotta be honest bro, Ive never played any of the half life games or even seen them played. Ive been researching it over the last few days to try and get a feel for it.

What I'd like from you or anyone else for that matter is what is say the top 5 most popular versions/mods for it.

Also we still need atleast 2 more if not more ppl to do this.

Xarcell would you do a badge for this? Maybe visible recognition would help draw some designers

My oldest son is playing this a lot, i get the feeling that deserts colors, sand, light brown , beige and light green is the main colours in the game, although there are several diffrent "traks" that they play, but most are in those colours.

As far as I know. All HL2 Textures, Logos,models etc....are free to use/edit. I believe they actually encourage it :) They are all located inside the SDK. As long as you don't sell this theme you guys are gold as far as I can tell.

Looking forward to seeing this one completed though.

Absolutely a life preview and working package for the lastest (no alpha) versions say RC2 and 8.6 plus a folder link for psd's just to be fair and honest.

But we still need a 5th Xarcell. Also we dont want to scare away a 5th or more designers, and if they are not use to doing TP themes but standard themes what about allowing crip to help them convert it.... just a suggestion as he's probably gonna be the best unbiased aid at this.

I will do one just to get another one out there.  Don't care about being in the running for the money, but I have been wanting to do a TP theme for a while.  Everything I have done so far has just been doing whatever I can to get it too look like I want.  I need to actually get them working right without errors and try to do the html/css right.  This will be a good first for me - because I'm such a Half-Life (actually Counter-Strike) fan.

maybe the winner could get a copy of TP 9.5?

Anyone willing to state thier status on the project so far?

I'm almost complete. I just wanna do some tweaking and now considering creating my own icons instead of using the default SMF/TP ones.

I'm also considering releasing the theme early, to squash bugs.

I have went with a worn grunge look like you see in some of the game. Mostly browns/oranges and it does adjust to a screen res of 1024 or higher. Considering 800x600 or higher, I dunno yet. I will also be sure to include a spot where folks can insert thier logo via admin, instead of editing the template like I have done in the past.

I do have psd's of everything.

Im willing to be a testpilot on my testsite, i can have my oldest son testing it out with his CS clan friends :)

Question for half life player/players on Garrys Mod, correct me if Im wrong but is this a sex spoof of half life or something? thats what Im finding mostly when it comes to screenshots lol. Either that or wacked out blood and guts. All the info i keep finding seems like its in german or something :D

from what I understand about Garrymod...

it is just a mod for the Half-Life2 engine (source) that allows you to do basically anything the engine is capable of.  Things like posing characters etc - Used a lot to make renders for the source games.  So put that alongside a 17 year old and yes, you probably do get a lot of "sex" stuff lol.

Just keep in mind that 1.1RC2 is no longer supported at SMF. YOu can't even download it anymore.

Yes, you can download it..but in the archives only, alittle bit hidden away. But anyway, RC3 isn't very different from RC2, so just use which ever.

I am having two different designs. I am thinking of entering both as entries. But the rules doesn't say so.
So i am planning as follows :
1) I do both the designs
2) I post on the "Other TP Themes" board both the designs and whichever people like, I'd submit that for the contest.
3) The other will also be released.

That sound more like a competition with in the competition, First let users vote on what theme that should enter the contest, and then vote again in the contest for the theme they like best.

IMHO i prefer that you pic the theme out that you personally like best, and enter that theme to the voting contest  ???

I can't port the HL theme from RC2 to RC3. I don't understand why it isn't working. been trying for a day now.

I tried it without TP and it worked fine.

But TP current release works only with RC2
So i am doing for RC2

Xarcell, Crip is working an a converter guide for 1.1rc3 with TP V.095 right now  :)

I believe RC3 will work on RC2.

For some reason I couldn't get it to convert up to RC3. So I had to redo it. Now I'm not happy with my theme and thinking of starting over...

Do we need to set a date for this? :)

HL2 is really good in my opinion.

Ask my oldes son about that game, he have been a member for a gaming Clan now since HL1 was released, they go on a lot of conests and dreamhacks here in Sweden just to meet people and play agains other Clans.

Ok, everyone can see what I got so far. As soon as I clean up the directories from unused work/images, I'll release it as a package to see if there are any unseen issues with it.

I did put some work into it, and as you can see it's very graphic's heavy. I'm not worried about load times with it because most poeple who will be using it or going to a HL2 site will be on broadband anyways. However, I will release a faster one later by compressing images and using no animations, thsi will prolly cut loads in half.

I have psd's for almost every little thing. I'll release it as a seperate package. Just because the damn theme file size is big enough as it is.

Let me know what you guys think. If I get time, there is some more custom icons I wanna add.

I have to agree with my son kevin, a greate theme Xarcell, I like the roll over effects in the forum where the images show up when you drag the mouse over the forums :)

And i think i gamer theme can be graphics heavy, i think that all online gamesr that play HL2 have bigger connections to be able to even play online, Again Xarcell, very well build and greate ooking theme.

Now get your but to XBOX360 theme (the silver and neongreen one you made) and upgrade that so i can use it on my site now  :knuppel2:  :-*

I just have a few suggestions if u dont mind.... The top Logo image, I think instead of a crowbar it could use something maybe displaying graphics from the game itself? Like a screenshot of the action sequence? or something similar displaying some of the key characters?

Theme looks great Xarcell! I like Akulions suggestion too.

The crowbar is from the game. I had to blow it up, that's why it looks like crap. It appears only if you haven't added a logo. So it shows the crowbar & forum name by default.

Anyways if you add your own logo(insert link through admin) the crowbar disappears and shows your logo instead.


Now I'm off to try and finish one that I think will be better...

Ive had to go back to the drawing board several times for a good looking layout but hopefully I'll get it all done in time. <fingers crossed> :)

Here's a preview of my theme. It's not finished yet, still need to make many icons and correct some styles.
Just to say that it's my first SMF theme, I'm sure there's lot of mystakes so don't hesitate to tell me where I'm wrong.
The header was first made for a 1024x768 screen but some page just don't fit this resolution so it's for 1200x1024 (I think gamers are all at least at 1200x1024). Maybe I'll make a header that can be fullscreen later.

Please keep in mind that this is in "real rough cut" and I'm still working and tweaking the first 3 themes of that template. Once I get everything down pat, I'll try and make things look better and make a theme for every main game by valve like: portal, team fortress, and day of defeat.

The theme is screen res adjustiable from 800x600 and higher. It is also lightweight. I dunno if I will be able to finish before the end of the contest to pick which one I want to enter. Been spending lots of time with me new love...

EDIT: you will need to select the theme "valve" in theme block.

Most people use 1024 X 768 or lesser.

Did you notice the game image sat the top of the themes? They link to teh theme.

yeah I liked it I would get rid of the block then because in other themes it doesn't work

Anyways, I'm done with the style(i think) and now gonan add the other themes. I'll be doing some tweaking on the vurrent themes as well.

I also fixed to bugs with emergence thanks to some things pork pointed out.

I was merely suggesting to not use the default themes buttons. It will make it look that much more original. If you want I can throw a button together for it. I'm sure you're capable though. :)

I'll give a peak but its far from complete, the menu will be between the screenshot and halflife tag and those are gonna be dropdowns for userbox, theme selection, and a third for column positions.... HL color scheme is pretty much set as you will see in all their games, websites and stuff - so it would be best to follow that

HEHE I'll get it done, Ive getting evaluted today for a scutter to get around for long distances but once thats done Ive got nothing planned but building this until friday. Get my 7mb cable modem tomorrow and I'll just drink lots of coffee, mt dew and pain pills.

Not mult color but mult theme ;) and multi column, hence the the normally closed dropdown boxes across the bottom of the header... there will be 3 :)

Definatly the brown one for HL2, no other color will give HL the correct feedback IMHO

Have the expert here besides me saying the same thing :)
But the multicolor could be nice to, that way diffrent clans can use their own colored layout with in the same forum  8)

No, I'm talking about the template_menu() You're using the default themes menu on your theme. I was suggesting you use a custom menu to make your theme even more original than it already is.

I wanna tweak the team fortress skin a bit more, and do the day of defeat skin for the valve theme. The portal skin is a bit dry, but there isn't anything released on it yet except a short vid...

I don't think the deadline should be extended. We've had a month, and if it does get extended, it'll make me wish I hadn't shown my themes yet. kinda unfair to me....

One Template (Display.template.php) is left for me still.
I'll finish it within today.
Just thought if i wanted some time to add mre tweaks.

Anyway i'll enter the theme as is for the contest and i'll update later.

It will be hard for me to finish in time because of my work but the deadline is the 15 so we must deal with it. Anyway, As Darkman, I'll show the theme as it is on the 15 and maybe continue tweaking it later.

The theme maker is the one who have to decide what theme to enter the contest, other wide it wont be fair and kindf of a vote for the theme even before the competition starts.
Choose the theme you like the best your self and enter that theme, THEN the rest of us will vote ONE time, not Two ;)

GFX need loading for the vertical menu as well as transfering the old menu items to the new menu, than the drop down where the old menu is now to create the column positions and theme choices, and yes thats correct themes.

Xarcell if you want to combine your themes into a multi theme HL2 Id be willing to help it if buys me some extra time :)

Im sure Xarcell will answer any questions about his theme in his own board here, he have made a Valve theme thread there to ;)

Xarcells board is private until Bloc turns it on.

I intend to split the themes as well. That way everyone can just use a single theme if need be as in the dod theme.

Great Idea dude. The only thing I don't like about your theme is the navbar/menu though. You should change it when you seperate em man.
