Title: Cannot install TP
Post by: infocom on July 31, 2006, 06:56:08 PM
HI all

After trying for hours and reading the posts on this forum I think there's something seriously wrong with TP for some people.

After installing I get no Admin panel for it and get the meesage at the bottom of the screen:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: tportal_version() in /home/mysite/public_html/Sources/Load.php(1607) : eval()'d code on line 365

It seems many people have this problem from just following instructions. Most always seem to say try the manual install. But that looks to take ages so I am not going to.

Has anyone found the problem to this very commmon error? If not then anyone know of another system similar to SMF with TP?

Thanks

Laurie

Sorry, its http://www.infocomonline.co.uk/~welshhm/

At first I spent ages trying to install, I kept getting the other common error:
"You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!"

To fis this I think I had to create a folder called temp in the Packages directory. I cannot change permissions easily as its owned by Apache of course. I usually change name of folders and re-upload by FTP then change permissions. This usually works.

Anyway, after getting passed the the above error I now get this error about "Call to undefined function: tportal_version()"

Both errors seem very common

It's not wrong with Tp at all ;)
You have the wrong theme, thats about all i guess

If you set your forum to SMF default and then uninstall all the SMF only theme you have installd, you will be OK.
Then install TP enabled themes and you have a great forum there.  :)

Is that TP_Appllo Theme?
Title: Re: Cannot install TP
Post by: infocom on July 31, 2006, 07:10:58 PM
Yes, but it happens with other themes that say support TP. Such as Juno, and Oxygen.
Title: Re: Cannot install TP

But not from the SMF default theme?

Post by: infocom on July 31, 2006, 07:16:24 PM
No, for Default Theme the error at the bootom completely disappears and theres no Admin for TP at all. I assumed it does not work with Default theme so installed one from TP site.

Laurie

P.S. Am using TP v.0.8.6. What confuses me though is why a lot of sites say they use v0.9.5 (such as bottom of this one) but the TP site says download latest one, v0.8.6? Maybe I have wrong version?

I have changed back to Default. Uninstalled Juno and Apollo. But nothing. Error goes but no TP anywhere.

I installed Apollo and then Juno becaise when I installed TP under Default I did not get anything. So installed these other 2 themes.

I also uninstalled everything, then installed the Themes, then changed to a new theme before installing TP thinking I should do it that way round (instead of TP fiorst then Theme) but get the same.

So I deleted entire SMF from server, started again installing SMF, then a Theme, then TP and get same. I get the error and no TP Admin. I dont get the error with Default though.

So Themes work fine, its only when I install TP.

:o

All mods needs to be installed from the default SMF setup.

Set your forum to SMF Default Core theme, uninstall the other themes you have installed so far.
Download the Tinyportal mod from here (http://www.tinyportal.net/smf/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=get99)

Upload that package through your packagemanager in SMF admin panel, hit the install and you should be good from there.

Use the default Theme until you have everything working good, then install other TP_Themes

Ok will give it a go, but am sure thats what I did. Will let you know shortly...

Also, here's some interesting errors I found relating to TP when trying to view IP address of Guest online...

P.S. Are you saying v0.9.5 is older than v.0.8.6? Thought it should be other way round.

Oh right!

Also, when uninstalling now:
"Error in Package Installation
At least one error was encountered during a test installation of this package. It is strongly recommended that you do not continue with installation unless you know what you are doing, and have made a backup very recently. This error may be caused by a conflict between the package you're trying to install and another package you have already installed, an error in the package, a package which requires another package that you don't have installed yet, or a package designed for another version of SMF. "

Can you paste the strings to from the list with errors, (the files you get errors if you install)

What other mods do you have installed there?

Ok, I deleted entire SMF and database and went for fresh install.

Kept default theme, did not change anything following installation.

Went to install package downloaded from above link and got the error message:
"You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!"

So did what I did before which is create the Temp folder manually and set permissions to 777 and it worked OK.

I proceeded right through to clicking "Restart your forum"...

And I got nothing. I have the default installation, no error and no TP admin. I cant see it anyway.

I am sure if I now install a Theme I will get the error as reported above. Should I be seeing some Admin panel for TP in Default theme now??

You cant bypass the packagemanager with a tempfolder.
Change the permissions to the package folder through FTP and then go for the install again.

Thought you said you read a lot of post on how to install ;)

I read about the error "You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!" and someone posted the solution to create a folder called "temp" in Packages and set to 777. It worked and it installed.. It wont install without it. At least I thought it installed. Perhaps this is a red herring.

Not sure what you mean by bypassing Package Manager.

Here's what I did:

1. Click Packages
2. Download Packages
3. Upload Package to Install. Chose the TP install file, Tinyportal0_86_rev2.zip
4. Clicked Upload
5. Got above error "You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!"
6. Create the folder "temp" and set permissions to 777.
7. Go back and Apply Mods again

This gives me a sucess message and asks to restart forum.

Also, I cant change permissions to Package folder so easily. The system creates the folder during install, therefore Apache/nobody owns it. This is a common issue I've seen. So I rename the Package folder to something else, download it and re-upload as Packages. Then change permissions.
Title: Re: Cannot install TP
Post by: infocom on July 31, 2006, 08:15:03 PM
OK, without creating the Packages/temp folder I am at the stage where you click Apply Mods and I get this error:
"You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!"

I have also gone to Options and changed file permissions so "Only the standard files are writable." but still get the error.

So if creating the temp file is wrong I must have missed something.

You have to contact your host about changing the owner of the files in the forum directory. You need to have access to that kind of permissions to get the files writable by you.

Or if that dont help, you have to go with the manual install package.
It's plin copy and paste, upload some files, and then point your browser to the TP_install-php for the db install.
Nothing much really

Its a shared hosting server, as per most people who host such things. Its not feasible to keep asking hosting provider to change permissions. Anyway, are you sure its a permissions thing, as stated I can change permissions by just renaming the Packages folder to something else, downloading and re-uploading the Packages folder by FTP so I become the owner. Then I can change permissions.

The only way I get passed this error is to create a temp folder. But it does not install as you know.

On some posts you have said you have manually changed the files.

Well instead of us manually changing the files, do you have the files changed already we can just upload? I can try that.

Otherwise another tip I found was install it on my local PC, get it running and copy it all over to the server. I may give that a go.

I really appreciate the quick response but this issue is such a common issue that it surprises me theres no quick solution for it yet, so I will have to find something else.

Thanks

Laurie

The problem does not necessarily lie within TinyPortal. This is a server issue not really a TP issue. Your server has some restrictions in place that are keeping the TP mod from being able to do things. Therefore not a simple issue that can be fixed. This is the exact reason that there is a manual install, because not everyones server will be able to install mods via the package manager.

I don't have any 0.86 files installed ATM or I would just upload them for you. Maybe someone else does.

If you get them, all you have to do is upload all the TP files, and the ones you get from someone here (or your local machine tip), then you'll need to run the manual_install.php file to update your database for TP to work. You should be good to go after that.

Not quite a suitable answer IchBin as there are MANY Open Source software that use install processes like this and they work fine. As if they've been designed to get around the common issue of shared servers not allowing root access to change file permissions.

Anyway, I HAVE SUCCESS!!... I have figured it out although not standard of course.............

1. Upload Package as normal.

2. After Uploading the package and before clicking Apply Mods I created the Packages/temp folder as stated before, as I knew this allows me to Apply Mods.

3. I changed temp folder permissions to 777.

4. I then clicked Apply Mods

5. I got a list of all files with Test Successful message, as I did before.

Here's the new thing I tried that made it work...

6. I changed all files now unzipped into the temp folder to 777. As the Apache user nobody owns them, I had to download the temp folder, rename the one on the server, re-upload the temp folder and then I could change permissions.

7. THEN I clicked on Install Now. Do not click on Install Now before changing the permissions for all files in the temp folder else it will say its installed but you wont see the admin panel for it anywhere.

I hope this is clear for those with same problem. If not you can email me and I can try to explain it a little more.

So perhaps the team could figure out the process here and why it does not complete for some users who perhaps have permissions which are quite standard and fix it on further releases?

Thanks very much for your very prompt replies G6 and Crip even though not the solution for me.

Laurie

P.S. I think TP looks brilliant. Haven't figured it all out yet, but am quite excited so although it has installation issues for some people it looks like a really great mod so well done. I hope it was worth the time spent!!

I would wager say that "most" open source scripts are not third party software when installed. You can't fix this issue necessarily because the server "Apache" is the owner when files are opened by it. You can't change what apache does. The fact that your server sets your temp files so that they aren't writeable is not an issue with TP/SMF its a server issue also. These are all settings that your server can be adjusted to fixing. I had to adjust my linux server to allow these things when I first set it up. And guess what, I have no issues now.

I'm glad you got it working. Thats a great little work around that I'm sure will come in handy for others. When you get your site going post it in the Showcase forum.

Yes, for tools such as Mambo/Joomla you can upload components which afterwards you cannot change permissions for or delete or overwrite using FTP. So you are correct, its the plug ins into OS software that cause the issues. For these systems I always download the folder and files, rename the folder on the server (you can do this even though you dont own it!), then re-upload the original file thus giving the "new" folder your ownership.  It was just that TP was not as easy as this, there were clearly other things going on in the Package Manager. So I do hope this process works for everyone else.

This is down to Apache ownership. Ask your host to set all ownership of files to you. Then retry.

If you have shell access, you may be able to do it yourself, but be carefull what you're doing. Ask your host if in any doubt about it.

I don't know if you noticed Gerrymo, but she did a great job with a little work around. If you missed it, you might want to read back a bit.

For future reference, and others with the same problem, it should be noted that the package manager does make file owned by the server, and the only way round that is via shell access, either directly, or via the host. Its a problem that SMF have been unable to resolve.

I've seen a few things that could possibly be used as fixes. But I think that SMF doesn't view this as "their" problem. It's a long standing issue that Linux/apache has had for quite some time. In fact, there is even a module that you can add to apache that resolves it somewhat located here.

It really boils down to the server I guess. I've been searching for a way for scripts to be able to determine their own user/group but have been unable to find anything.

Hi Gerrymo.

I have shell access but cannot change ownership. I think this is because I am not the owner of the files in the first place. I am not a Linux expert but can find my way around and dont think I can change ownership. I have had to ask my hosting provider in the past to do it for me, but as I am a web developer using Open Source software I will come across this issue often and cannot keep asking them to do it all the time.

So for the time being the only solution I found is to download the folder in question, rename the folder on the server, re-upload the doanloaded folder and change permissions on that one. The only draw back is its time consuming if there's a lot of files, and then you have old files you cannot delete!

I downloaded a copy of putty for doing it. The way I do it is to enter the ip addy of the server, log in as root and run the command line to change ownership. Your host will be able to give you step by step instructions, or ask on their forum, if they have one (most do), and one of the other webbys will tell you how.

It's actually quite easy to do chown.

Thanks, I'll ask them. I use SSH Tectia Client to access shell but have to login as my own user of course. Dont think they'll give me root. I'll ask. Thanks.

If your host is really nice, they'll just add your user account to the apache group so that you can edit the files without having to change ownership. :D Thats how I solved my issue on my server.... but I also own my linux box too. :)

TP for RC3 is not yet supported. You must wait until 0.95 is released which is very close. However, there are some posts in here that explain what to do. I think if you'd have searched you would know that.
