Title: File Permissions
Post by: atlantic2 on August 17, 2005, 04:13:51 PM
On install I am getting to the:
QuoteFTP Information Required
Some of the files this package needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and chmoding the files.
but this isn't working on my server, which isn't really unusual.
Is there a list of the files that need to have write access so I can do this manually?

All files should be 777 except the Setting.php and Settings.bak files which can be 666 I believe.

Manually chmod all files and directories to 777 and still getting this message. Tried entering in FTP info but won't take it.Any idea what I am missing?

Only thing I can recommend is to double check the permissions. Here's a link at SMF that gives a detailed messages on permission from Unknown.

Im happy Im not the only one with the 777 problem, IchBin & Bloc thanks for your help, I will try this wkd after the BBQ

PS Anyone that can backup (the site above) 'This is not a security risk', please help since I have to still sweet talk my husband into letting me do this, lol. I have talked to afew people and I get the same answer 'It will open your /smf up to the lovely world of getting hacks'.........something I prefer to avoid. :)

I had to manually set the rights to when I installed SMF, that got me by the installer issue with that progam.
I did the same with the files listed above and couldn't get around it. Not real sure I feel good about giving more files 777 rights, since if I know what files are opened, I sure there's 100's of hackers that know the same thing. Been hacked before twice on the same site within a few days and sure don't want that again.

Yeah, we'll see what Unknown has to say about it. IMO, I haven't seen anyone say that their site has been hacked because of permissions being 777. If they did get it, you have more to worry about than your SMF directory.

The sites that were hacked were not SMF. The memories are still there though, that's why I am careful now.

Ichbin go re-read http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=2987.0;all
Its been updated and has url's for the hacks from my hoster.
As well, since this crappy fall out, I am boycotting SMF (sorry folkies) but its really been a #$@#$ to try and get this to work, and the only answer I get from everyone is to put myself in danger, and thats not what I want pengi to be about. Its a happy place.........where the penguins run free and wobble around and do silly little things (mostly my writings). I wish you all good luck, Bloc your themes are AWESOME ALWAYS and I will never forget the fun I had here, but until SMF can work without hassle, its not something I want involved in.

Bloc, Im sure I will still poke my head in here if you allow it, and I may come back and go 'how hard is it to convert this (something something) to make it work with your awesome themes), but until then I wish you all much luck and many happy blessings.

Cheers & massive hugs
Ich- your funny, you should know where your spleen is!!  :P

Sorry to hear that pengi. Yeah, things didn't go well at the SMF forums. lol But, IMO SMF is nothing like what Yabb was. It's a completely different Board written in PHP. I hope there's something in the future that will make it possible for you to do this. Until then, good luck and have fun with your site.

Ok, read the thread over there. I am not saying this or that about permissions - I know too little about it myself. Only thing I know is that when i install SMF i need to make the attachments folder plus a few others 777. But my main root folder is still 755 - which is set by my host. So it should be safe....? When I hear people talk about hacking a SMF forum, its usually password guessing the cause of it, not so much permissions on the server. :)

Anyways...I am doing a manual install script, that will make the database tables for you. The changing of files would need to be done manually - since the package manager can't touch the files - and the TP files will have to be ftp' up. More struggle to get it working...but once done I will strive in future releases to only modify TP files..so you can update through ftp.

That was alot to read, huh :)
Going back to sleep now, the random stupid talking in sleep woke me up.........no, it wasnt about the thread on smf site either, it was about Tigers :)
