SFM has been fantastic to work with so far. This is my first week with you guys after being with PhP-Nuke forever. I am most impressed! But I am having a bit of a problem with the download module and file attachments that I am unable to solve by searching these forums.
Is it just me or is the TP Download Module still not fixed? Or have I missed something. Anything over a tiny file seems to time out. Many files uploaded that seem to work and show up in the download manager have a zero length. But others work just fine. The hit and miss on smaller files is so random that I have not been able to place my finger upon anything specific.
Something I would like to see is that uploaded file names not be case specific. a .zip will work, but a .ZIP or a .Zip will fail every single time.

Seems like you have permission issues to the tp-downloads folder and the files in it.
Check that you have set the permissions to 755 both to tp-downloads folder and the content in it.
Many thanks for the reply.
You were quite correct about some of my issues being directly related to the file permission settings. Because all of the files we were testing were from several megs to several hundred megs in size we had a 100% failure rate. This lasted until we started working with files that were only a few K in size. By that time we had been in and out of FTP with several accounts so often our permission levels were all over the gambit.
After correcting the file permissions, all tests with small files worked correctly if the file name was short, all in lower case and again the file had to only be a few K in size.
It would be nice not to fail a file name because of the case of the extension though. Would love to see a change there.
Unresolved is the issue that the download module does not support larger files. Thumbing back through the forums here I have noted comments about the issue, but I have not found if it is considered a problem to be resolved, or a limitation of the download feature that will not be upgraded.
Knowing that this is all still in bETA lends me to the hope of a file system that will support larger file transfers. Still I would love to see someplace posted that my hopes may be realized in the future.
My apologies if I have missed that post in these forums, and if so could someone be so kind as to point his old man in the right direction to it.
Many thank, and respects,
Bill Cruz Sr.

I had some similar errors in my download section before the release of TP V091 for the Alpha testers.
It seemd like the files and manager didnt like any dots between the file names. EG
my.file.dot.zip
If i changes the name to
my_file_dot.zip they worked great
So if you have any dots between the names, change them to underscore instead and see if it helps.
I havent heard anything about bigger files need some other changes beside the upload limit size in some servers and hosts, but if you can upload big files now, i dont think changing anything there will help you out with your errors.
Yep, dots fail the file name test for sure.
No errors except for timeout errors on large files over 500K.
Try rename the files and skip the dots.
Delete the files from the manager and reupload them so the download manager get the files and names correct in the db
OK... I know that you are reading a ton of messages right now.
if I name a file abcdefgh.zip and it is greater than 500KB it will time out.
I do not have any file name issues any longer. I know the limitations of the download manager.
I do not have any file permission problems either.
Lets just pick one part of the problem and that is file sizes greater than 500K failing on an upload.
Again, stock 8.3 file name all alpha lower case with a 2 meg file. (abcdefgh.zip)
Can anyone upload to the TP-download folder using the upload option and have it work on any site anyplace ever with a file name as given with the size given?
This is the exact error:
An Error Has Occurred!
The upload was not able to complete.This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow.
Please consult your server administrator for more information.
I am testing for a gigabit backbone directly to the server.
Max file size is set to 8192000 Kb
last test was a 4.2 MB file named abcdefgh.zip
Does anyone have the ability to upload large files with the current module?
You have to contact your hot about this issue, that upload size limit is set by the server software and host. If you have your own server, you need to chaange the settings your self, and if you have a host, they need to change the limit for file sizes for you.
you can do some minor changes in the db tables for the TP Download manager, but i have seen some others in here still having troubble with this, and they had to contact the hosting to make them allowe larger files
Thanks.
Yep, I own all my servers. Have them co-located at 5 points across the USA. In the exact same shell, using a PhP-Nuke web site over the last several years, and even today because I have not erased it yet, I can upload and download any file I want, and of any size without any restrictions or problems.
I will try to find on my own what configuration on my servers cause only the SMF/Tinyporal site to fail on uploads but allow all of my other sites to work just fine. To be honest, I do not have a single clue what that could be. And because I get paid to know these thing it really has me wondering right now.
I do whole heartedly thank you for all of your time and thoughts put in to my problem. I have been so very tickled with SMF and Tiny Portal that I can not even to express my excitement over the switch this week to SMF from Php-Nuke. Though this upload problem has and shall be a stumbling block for me, there is no way that I will ever give up my new SMF forums, or the wonderful front end called TinyPortal.
Tuesday we will be back in the office, and I have 15 Engineers that will have an assignment on their desk to solve this problem.
It is good to be the Boss.
Again, many respects and thanks.
Oh I have a bad feeling I am about to eat my own shoe here very soon.
I just jumped over to my PhP-Nuke site and all files larger than 1 meg are failing. (/me pounds his head against the desk) Something has changed on my server and my eyes have now popped out of my head and stuck to my glasses.
I shall let you all know if I have done something stupid or if one of my Employees. If it is the latter, her or she will be restricted from playing online games at work for a week...
I need sleep! Good night G6, and thank you for all your time. The power of the pillow has taken full control of me now.
The Evil Boss has spoken.
Great work on Cerberus Theme. :up:
The Cerberus is fantastic! I just modified the graphics a bit for more of a World of Warcraft feel. You guys made it so easy for anyone to tweek SMF to fit their needs. I am very happy with it.
Problem Solved!
Know that the taste of my shoe shall linger in my mouth for a good while to comeâ€Ã,¦.
My hat is off to G6 for solidly nailing the problem directly on the head!
I run SMF on a Fedora 4 server with c-panel. Off the Root of the server in the /etc folder is a file called â€Ã...“php.iniâ€Ã,Â. There is where you will find all sorts of amazing and wondrous configuration options to amuse yourself for hours on end.
Back to the topic on hand though. Look for the following lines of code.
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; File Uploads ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; Whether to allow HTTP file uploads.
file_uploads = On
; Temporary directory for HTTP uploaded files (will use system default if not
; specified).
;upload_tmp_dir =
; Maximum allowed size for uploaded files.
upload_max_filesize = 2M
The last line is the key to my salvation and yours if you are suffering like I was.
I changed my line to read
upload_max_filesize = 1000M
This is because I have a huge server and can do such things. I would not recommend 1000M for people running inside a little 200 meg folder.
As for me, I caused this problem myself by breaking my own rule I have posted on the wall in my own office.
NEVER! Never ever install more than one application or upgrade more than one piece of software on a server at the same time.
I upgraded Apache, PHP, SQL, and added SMF and TP and more all on the same day. I overwrote several custom files that I have not looked at since I built the server. One of them being my php.ini on the server in Virginia that I had just put SMF on.
I grovel to the forum Gods for forgiveness and shall go out and find some ashes and sack cloth to start my punishment.
Again, many thanks to you all for making a fantastic product. I look forward to the day when we will be adding modules for TP too. Love to share my toys!
/salute again to G6
I could raise the size of the files... but now when it takes over 3 minutes to upload, it resets to the Upload area like I did not send anything... :/
Any solutions???
You could raise it where? In TP? php.ini? If it's not raised in PHP.ini it won't make a difference what you put in the TP settings.
I think you can change the limit for the time out in your sql db, Im not sure about this though, but i have read some post in here not to long ago about some one that change the timeout limit on upload/download files.
I will see if i can find it
I raised the size of the uploads in the php.ini as indicated here :)
But now it resets when it takes too long, which surely happens for bigger files...
If you dont have access to PHP.INI you could maybe try adding this to the .htaccess file
php_value upload_max_filesize 20M
Oh I do... the problem is not with the size of the files.... now is with the timing out.... after 2 or 3 minutes it resets back to the upload blank page as if nothing was started... :(
I think you need to contact your host about that issue, it's usually some settings in the DB that needs attention or some change.
Describe the problems and tell them what you want to do, and they will tell you what they will allowe and what not
Yes, I will try that again. I have once but they did not return me anything. *L*
