I just did a fresh install of SMF, applied the security patch, then used the Package Manager for Tiny Portal 0.86, and SMF tells me it cannot install TP because a file in my /packages directory is not set correctly. BUT IT IS!
This is so frustrating. I could not get TP to work on another site too that had a few mods, but this fresh install has no mods at all. I have tripled-checked all permission and they are correct. Why doesn't the Package Manager work to install the TP mod?
Do you folks offer paid installation? I have no themese except for the SMF default.
I'm ready to give up.
Thank you very much.
Mark
Hey Marc.
What file/files is it that give the error?
The error says the following:
"You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!"
However, the few files in the /Packages folder are CHMOD to 777 and I've been able to install and remove other mods, just to test. So far this is still a virgin install along with the security patch.
I've deleted the TP zip file and re-uploaded via the Package Manage and I keep getting the same error msg.
I've checked, and re-checked, the permissions on all the folders and files listed in the TP installation doc too.
Thank you for any suggestion.
Mark
You say you have chmod the files IN the folder, but how about the Package folder it self?
Oh yes, the /Packages folder is chmoded too.
This happens when new temp files are created..they won't get the 777 treatment. In the end its the server setup that dictates this. On my previous host I could not do any package manager work..all had to be done manually.
But here is an idea: if you have experience with local webserver - on your pc - install into that the same SMF version and TP, then simply upload the changed files. Run manual_tp_install.php on the live installation to install the database tables, and you should be fine.
No you lost me <grin>.
This particular SMF/TP setup is located at Pair.com which is a rather large world hosting facility.
I really hate to give up again, but I just cannot afford to spend more time on this. I will remove TP.
Thank you very much for your time, though! I do appreciate it.

The manual install should work on all settings if you have followed the manual.
You can have missed the manual database files though, that you run from your browser.
dosent matter..:( i give up.....:(
IT WAS PERFECT...it was just what y was looking for...smf+portal:(((
Send me your account for database and ftp and your site url if you want in priv PM, and i will help you if you want, a admin account on your forum is good to

I really would like to return the favor.
Can you recall what I did wrong? I've installed message forum software for years now, but this got me lost.
It could be I work with so many other web hosts that you are right in regard to the temp files being set on some hosts.
Like I said, I will donate end of the month.
I got another site too that needs help <grin>. But for another time.
As a writer, I can promise when I find opportunities to talk about TP, I will in a favorable manner.
Sincerely yours,
Mark Bishop :)
Good deal :)

I really dont know ::)
When the support by us dont do the tricks, i dont go in there and try it out my self.
I allways go for the manual install and uploads all the tp files, then do the changes to the files needed and run the db setup file, ;)
I dont look arround in the files or the codes, if there are any files there i just overwrite them when i upload the manual package.
Glad you guys are happy with it though :)
I'm having a problem even earlier in install. From Package Manager, I browse, then upload the .zip file. It shows up in my uploaded packes list. But when I click [Apply Mod] I wait and wait, looks like something is happening . Then stops and I'm still looking at the packages uploaded list, with [Apply Mod] next to TinyPortall, no list of fiiles modified and tested successfully. When I go into my server, I see a Temp folder created with some TP files/directories in it, so something is happening, but its not finishiong the install and not reporting back any error to me.
I tried this first on a fresh install of SMF 1.1 RC2. Then after installing the security patch. Then after installing another mod successfully. Sam e thing happens. Any suggestions?
Check that you have right permissions to the files that TP needs to change.
You can do that from the package manager
Or itÂÃ,´s some connection problems with your database

I've checked permissions, everything was set to 777 prior to install attempt. I suppose it could have been a connection issue, except I was able to upload, apply, and finish install of other packages. Will try a fresh download of the .zip file, maybe there was corruption?
Edit: OK, re-downloaded zip, tried again, everything went fine, so was corrupted, or my connection was bad earlier, or something, but works now. Thanks for the help.
I thought I'd be able to install TP, but I can't find this file anywhere on the index.template.php page:
<img src="', $settings['header_logo_url'], '" alt="', $context['forum_name'], '" border="0" />';
Is there a download somewhere of these modified files? That sure would make things a lot easier. I'm doing a completlely fresh install of SMF and TP, so there are no worries about overwriting anything.
The site was supposed to be located here, and it is sort of, but underneath a bunch of errors: http://vitalfinds.com/forum/index.php
BTW, I misspelled the forum name I usually use by adding an extra "i" Could this be changed by an admin?
The index.template.php file for 1.1rc2 and tp v.086 you can find in the install forum, here.
The forum name you simply change in Admin/Configuration/Server Settings/Then change it in FORUM TITLE box :)
