Title: Here is one for you
Post by: parentingdiscussions on May 05, 2006, 12:01:15 PM
Yesterday while I was working my cell phone rings, and this nice gentleman on the other end says to me, Hello, I am from such and such and I would like to talk to you about your hosting company, and your website, and I stood there for a second and said, well I am pretty happy with what I got, and he said, well, the reason I am calling you is because I am sitting here viewing your website and it really could be improved a lot, and I can help you with that.

He goes on, I can make it so that you will have a lot more visitors then you already have, and you can make more money then you are making right now, I guarantee you that I can get at least 100.000 hits daily, and your forum will be done more professionally with a new product that is now on the market, and is one of the top forum programs in the world. Ok, so what is the program I asked, well sir, I can’t tell you that right now, because this program has just started, and you are going to be one of the first people to have this program if you agree to sign up with us, and change your hosting company and let us design your site. Well, I really am happy with what I got, I said, besides I don’t think you can beat the price of what I pay for my hosting, and I have a few good people who help me with my forum area, He says, but the program you are using puts you at risk for a number of attacks, as of matter of fact right now I have hacked into your ftp site and I could destroy your site right now if I wanted too, that is how easy it was for me to break through the security, with our product it is impossible for any hacker to break through, we have people working around the clock to prevent this for happening.

So, you are in my ftp area right now? Wow you are good, but tell me, if you are in my ftp area, what is the sites real name? (pause on the phone) well sir, I am not allowed to discuss that with you, our company does not allow us to discuss this over the phone for security reasons. Ok, well how do I sign up? (stringing him along) well if you give me your credit card number right now, we can sign you up for a 2 year membership, and if you act now we will throw in our newest feature for websites, and your hosting will be free for the first 4 weeks, and after that you only pay $75.00 per-month, and you get round the clock technical support free!!!,

So what is your companies name again? I asked, Sir without your credit cared number I can not give you that information, I am sorry, but our company is world wide and the most popular hosting and web Design Company in the world. (I then ask) well if you are the most popular then, let me ask you something, if you are so popular how come you won’t give me the name of the company, and why is it that you say that it is new product, and why would I even give you a credit card number if I don’t even know who I am talking too, ok, buddy the game is over, there is no such company and right now your not in my ftp site because if you were, go ahead and delete everything, its all backed up, and I am not worried, it is a scam and you ----------- and he hung up on me, now what is wrong with this picture? Lol, holy smokes who would fall for this scam?

He lives in US so i guess it was from there the call came.
But i wonder how he got your cell phone number ?
Relate one portal to a owner and then get the cellphone number when the site says nothing about where or who owns it.
Your host maby gave the phonenumber out to someone?

If any host of mine did that, they wouldnt be my host for long. On top of that, we have laws in the UK to ensure it doesnt happen, and I have a very good lawyer.

Through WHOIS, admin, tech, and billing contact information is provided for domains, unless you subscribe to a privacy service.  Network Solutions offers such a service, don't remember the cost.

As has been previously stated, these calls are looking for those less knowledgeable and easily victimized.  Goes hand-in-hand with the email phishing that's rampant.

I've seen on a few commerce sites a "hack safe" logo - have been meaning to check it out, but haven't had the time.  That would be something I'd be interested in implementing to secure my site - although have a feeling it's going to be quite cost-prohibitive.

The hosts i have used, they can only see what company the host are, and the dns for the host server i have my domain on. Nothing about me personally, like phone, address or similar.

Pages encoded with CF offer greater protection; however, non-CF pages are vulnerable - so I'm looking for a global solution that protects all page types, HTML, PHP, etc.

Thew registrant I use has personal info hidden by default I think. If not there is a free service to opt out of whois lookup. I have my details hidden on all domains. Not sure if you can use it from outside the UK or not, but they are at www.123-reg.co.uk

I dont use their hosting though, only for domain registration, the change the nameservers to mine.

Well just got home from work and powwy, you all felt the same way I felt after the call. I contacted my phone company to find out why this person happened to get my phone number, but then it dawned on me, I have two phones, one for business and the other for personal use, my business is listed under my company name, but the thing that got me about this issue was the fact that he never really mentioned any names, and when I asked him he said he couldn’t give that information over the phone. Another thing is that when the call came in, it came in as a private number, but my phone company is going to find out where the call came from.

Honestly, I have been bombarded with hosting companies claiming that they can give me a better deal, but that is mainly through emails and regular mail. This would be the first time someone has called me. Not long ago I was contacted by a web developer, and he/she told me that my web site sucked! And who ever designed it was not a professional web designer. I wrote back and told this person that first of all, I was the one that created my parenting site, and yes the main few pages do suck,  I told this person that I am working on something better all the time, I just have to take my time because I am in no hurry. Besides, I don’t know about the rest of you, but the way I see it, who really cares anyway, the main site is the forum, not the opening pages, so get real. Ok, I admit, those pages do need something better, and I am working on something, but until then if you don’t like it don’t look.

Just a few of my projects that I have started on.

I am also working on a page for G6 sons site, but you will have to ask for her permission to view that.
