How to provide and integrate a new TP module!
MetalHellsangel (http://www.tinyportal.net/smf/index.php?action=profile;u=3338) an me did a little head spinning for an additional link manager module. And ok, i started to code one.
Of course it's not ready for now. But i post here for two reasons:
- We need some ideas, help and testing!
- I figured out, how to integrate a new module in TP/SMF
Don't want to repost the whole modifications, just look at my testboard at www.lucky-family.net (http://www.lucky-family.net/smf/index.php?board=2.0).
Some remarks:
The modifications are only based on TP 0.86, doesn't matter which SMF-Version you use.
Of course none of the links is functionally by now!! You won't see much of the link-manager. Just the module-link in the user-box. Registered users will see additional links "Add Link" and "Link Manager", but not funtional, too.
As i said, i just coded the integration (and started with the rest) and provided a small HowTo on this page.
Ok guys, what do you think?
And @Bloc:
In the other thread about the missing index
$txt['downloads']you mention this slightly modification (and possible bug) about $current_action in index.template.php. What is it for? i didn't get the sense. And left it out for the "lm"-$GET-Var in my module.
One reposting from my testboard.
Link Manager - The very beginningThese are my goals:
- Integration with Bloc's module-system
- Reuse as much as possible and as less as needed from the download-manager-code
- First features (nearly the same as in dl-manager):
- Different permissions to add and to manage links
- Table fields: Title, URL, Description, Category, Icon, Additional picture
- In the future: tag system
Feel free to add comments...
Tucker
great Idea starting a thread tucker, alway use feedback. :D
I can't devolop the xml file until we know what the change's will be for sure but I belive we can drop the screen shot's for links table in the db.
Oh, i see you were thinking about the same (additional picture = screenshot). I will see, how much i can use from the dl-manager code. But for sure, this is not that important!
yeah I was just commenting :P
hmm... Sounds like you have a plan. I don't have any suggestions right now honestly... I haven't given it much thought. Just wanted to let you know I saw the thread. :) I'll post back after I think more about it.
Due to a lack of knowledge of coding, I can't offer any help, but I wanted to tell you that I have been dreaming of a link manager for SMF/TP similar to the one in PostNuke - simple, with no thumbnails, link exchange or other bells & whistles.
Thanks for your efforts! ;D
Maybe someone might take the time to integrate something like this (http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/)?
A link manager is def. in the plans for TP - because the concept is , as Tucker describes, very similar - but simpler - to the download section. In other words, it should perform even faster.
So not to discourage anyone..but it will be included, just not sure exactly when. There might be several things happening once the basic system is overhauled.
So I am wondering...would this be similar to the MKPortal TopSites link? I have a friend who I could not get to use TP but I noticed it has this function and thought it would be a nice feature for TP instead of having to create a board just for website adverts...
It basically will be managing links..but since it counts hits it should easy to add a "topsite" section - as in most visited links.
Ok, so now I am getting antsy...I can't wait for the new release...
Mots likely it will not be n 0.9, but 1.0 might.
Ok...seeing as how major updates tend to take a rather long time...I added my own topsites feature to the forum...
Downside: Currently you have to be a member to access it but if you want to look at it (TopSite in the menu bar) user/pass = test/test.
Please do not add banners with this account.
The benefits of this integration is it also lets you track how many hits your particular banner gets as well as a few other features.

How do I intergrate my aarvarktopsite? I got one but never thought of intergrating it. :\
Pretty much the same way i did the gallery and everything else (lol) on my forum...there are instructions at my site for integrating the gallery...just follow the directions in regards to forum files and it can be done.
Thanks TechnoDragon! Hopefully I'll be done intergrating the gallery and topsite by tonight.
Anytime!
If you have any issues getting it integrated, let me know...i will help!

Is this a feature with TP yet? Sorry if I missed this somewhere im rather new to TP and im loving it! :)
Nope its not. At this time there are too many things in the todo list that are coming before the link manager.
bummer, but thanks for the fast reply. i look forward to all TP new features and updates :)
thanks again.
Well, at least you will get multiple menus in beta3 :) Plus you can actually fetch a menu from a block or in a template from a dedicated function.
