When I switch in SMF from just the default smiley set to customized smileys, the smileys in the shoutbox stop working. Is this normal or do I need to change some other setting to get it to work?
They stop working? As in you can't post a smiley? What do you mean by that?
Instead of a normal smiley I just get : ) etc

Looks like you need to get the smileys working properly first, there's some not working in your forum either. Look at the posts in this thread for example, http://www.the-mmc.co.uk/index.php?topic=1072.0
Give me a test account (send me a pm) please and I'll take a look. ;)
EDIT: You also have your member awards images missing. ;)
I have just moved the forum from one host/domain to another ... in the process I have not yet brought across all smileys I had on the old domain/host. The smileys that I have here are the standard ones that come with SMF which I think should still work.
I will add the old ones back as soon as the shoutbox displays smileys from a set other than the default.
The member awards are also still work in progress

I do not seem to be allowed to send pms
PM are limited until 5 posts I think. I've added one to your post count. Go ahead and see if it works for you now.

Thanks, got it. I'll take a look. O0
OK, seems the Default smiley set is working again now, it wasn't when I first looked. There's no other smiley sets installed though, have you deleted them?
not yet, as soon as I changed the smiley settings to "enable customized smileys" (which I have just done again), the smileys in the shoutbox disappear ... have a look at it now
I have uploaded the set I want to use to a new directory called mmc ...
