hi guys,

worked out how to add extra columns to the left & right side of portal but how can i add 3 or 4 columns to the front page on the portal.

still not sure, play around a bit with it

There are different layout options you can choose to display on the frontpage. One or more of those options will display your articles in different columns etc.
