Title: New installation!
Post by: anyoldcard on June 02, 2010, 04:49:16 PM
I have a newly installed SMF version 1.1.11 on a Hostgator sever. I uploaded the newest version of Mod Name TinyPortal Version 1.099. I list all files and no errors, everything checks out great and all tests successful.

I have the forum set in the default core theme as required. When I apply the mod, it says all successful except for the very last,

23. Execute Code SMF1/tp_install.php
(it has nothing where successful is at for the others)

I can move around inside the admin section and there is a side box that says Tiny Portal but as soon as I go to the regular forum area, I get a warning and TP is not installed. The page will not display.

I noticed here that Tiny Potal installer has 23. Execute Code SMF1/tp_install.php and it is not successful. my forum is in a folder called support so would the path need to be support/tp_install.php or ./tpinstall.php ???

Thanks for any pointers or help.
Ronald.

I thought I would add the warning:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@traditionalhost.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Ahhhh, I found more in the logs:

Unable to load the 'TPShout.english-utf8' language file.

And:

Database Error: Illegal mix of collations (utf8_unicode_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8_general_ci,IMPLICIT) for operation 'ifnull'
File: /home/tradme/public_html/support/tp-files/tp-modules/TPShout/Sources/TPShout.php

Since I was able to look around the admin, I turned off the shout and one other thing and it all works like a champ now. Now to figure out why the shout is bring down the forum when it is activated.  O0

Please use the search in the future. Simply search for part of your error text should get you there. I have just recently been helping a user with the same exact problem.

I knew thats what it was. A clue would have helped and kept me from posting. Thanks for the link. I have often tried searches with little or no help and I am like most people, I am just trying to get the masses off my back with a down forum.

I understand your frustration though and can relate. We just went over 50k posts and I have the same problems with people not searching and yet do it myself, go figure. I usually always work my own problems out but sometimes take a bit longer. I will try to remember to search in the future dude.

haha, thanks for the chuckle. For a second there I had to go back and read my own post. Didn't mean to come off rude if it sounded that way to you. Hard to remind people of that without coming across a little abrupt I suppose. I hope you are able to fix it. Or at least get your host to help you fix it if you can't.

It will take a little while but I will get it. I still do not have the shout box showing and the log has a massive number of errors but I think some of those are coming from an old theme that I like to use. I will get it all worked out in a bit.

I have been coming here and also running TP for years and I love the site. You have always been more than patient.

I do not think this is searchable.

Is the Ajaxchat and shout mod a security risk?
I have often heard that chat programs are a no-no because they are easily hacked?

That is true, shoutboxes and chat programs offer easier methods of hacking a server. Bloc has fixed a few of those exploits in his own shoutbox over the years. Most of the hacks are defacing hacks though. Like the most recent one that allowed someone to input certain CSS into a shout that would completely take over the page that the shoutbox was on.

I will disable the shoutbox but I do not say this to alarm others. I have a group of guys that i got into a pissing contest with and they are all on my old forum but never post.

I call them the hacker, porno, spammer guys. They bring down my smf forum, my zen carts and a few galleries on 40 different sites. They somehow change the sessions table in the sql and it throws an error. once in a while it is the "whos-online" table too. I do a "REPAIR TABLE" and the problem is fixed. Takes all of 5 minutes although one guy did change the settings.php somehow. I uploaded a new one and the site was back up.

I have ask Webmasters (parent host) to help but they have shown no effort at all so i moved everything to Hostgator and  VPS server. Hostgator has been great. These guys were stealing as much as 10gigs of bandwidth from 30 domains which adds up to alot of losses that i cannot afford.

I have had multiple Brute Force Attacks since moving to Hostgator so I am sure they have followed and are trying to get in so if the Shoutbox or chat program makes this easier for them, I will not activate it.

Mostly these guys are a PITA because they do not steal anything but they do bring down the different sites (mostly ecommerce) and cause loss in sales. I will soon be PCI compliant and I use 10 digit passwords now with letters, numbers and digits and I keep all programs upgraded.

The old forum was open to the public with some private threads, the new forum is all private with no open threads. I am installing a new firewalll which the old server would not let me do, plus Hostgator has their own firewall. I use host names here so people will know to stay away from some hosts that are not willing to help their clients and all they they must do is host and they do that poorly. I will go now and join your theme club.
later,
Ronald
