Title: TP1b4 to b5 upgrade frustration...
Post by: GhostRider2110 on May 27, 2010, 08:10:52 PM
:crazy2: Says it all...  I am at my wits end.. I am sure there is a simple answer, but I can't seem to come up with it.

I have made several attempts to get upgraded from B4 to B5-x  with no luck.  Now I think I am stuck in a limbo state.  As you can see from the package list, it says 1.099 is installed but the version listed on the site still says B4.

I had posted an error when B5 first came out and I was able to back out. I waited for B5-1 and had other issues.  Now an uninstall produces error in the file check...  Any help would be greatly appreciated. If access is needed,  let me know...

Thanks

Not much we can do about that Mitch. I hope you made a backup and can restore your files to before the TP install. If your server isn't making the necessary edits to the files, or it may not upload all the TP files... it generally means there's some type of permissions of configuration wrong on your server. There's no way to fix it without either restoring the backup, or for you to go through the manual install and verify everything. If something needs to be fixed it will needed to be changed manually.

Thanks IchBin,

I have tried the manual install and it seems the files have the correct information.  Maybe I am just missing some of the files... I can put them there.. I have so many backups I have lost count.  :)   I followed the manual editing instructions in the doc's section of the site...

Did you run the database file too? The instructions in the docs site are a little outdated. If I were you I'd go off the instructions from the mod page on SMF where you click parse for your version of SMF.

Well here is the update.  I went through again and checked all the files like you suggested Ichbin, using the mod page on SMF.  The DB update file would not run.  Gave "table could not be updated"  I'm a little better off than last time.  But the front page is not showing any content.  Getting the following errors in the log:

http://usscalemasters.org/forums/index.php?action=packages
8: Undefined index: leftbar
File: /home/usscalem/public_html/forums/Themes/default/Packages.template.php (main_above sub template - eval?)
Line: 784

http://usscalemasters.org/forums/index.php?action=admin
8: Undefined index: rightbar
File: /home/usscalem/public_html/forums/Themes/default/Admin.template.php (main_above sub template - eval?)
Line: 798

I had the forums in maint mode but will take it off bit to allow someone to see what is happening.

Pretty much everything else works but the front page....  I have changed it to the default theme and that didn't change anything...

Thanks

If I try to uninstall TP 1.099 I get this:

1.   Execute Modification   ./index.php   Test failed
2.   Execute Modification   ./Sources/Load.php   Test failed

I was trying to uninstall and reinstall...  Just more info...

Thanks

Mitch,

Turn off your Random Pic's block, and maybe your Shoutbox block and let me know what happens.  Or maybe, try renaming the Random Pic's block to "Random Pics" without the apostrophe.

Hmm that is interesting.. I will do that.. but I didn't have a shout box turned on before the upgrade.. hahaha.. Will let you know what happens.

Sorry.. didn't help any...  Now the front page will not load.  I turned off Search, Shoutbox (which were off before the upgrade) and removed the "'" from  Random Pic's.  Did nothing but remove those from the front page.  I tried turning off Random Pics and not the front page will not display.  Just sits and churns loading...

Ok, this is interesting... I shut off everything in the Left Panel Blocks and now more is showing up... Looking closer, much has been turned on that I didn't have before...  --Mitch

OK, I have figured out some of it.. Seems more changes that I remembered reading about. My main block on the front page was not in a category, so no matter what I did, it would not show up until I assigned it to a category.  Still having issues with some menu's I had assigned and if I turn on the "Downloads" block I have send on the left panel, the front page will not load.  Also Random Pic's is probably outdated. Will debug that next...

Search for the "unknown column" error Mitch. I have provided a fix for those in the bug tracker which are coming out in the next release.

Great IchBin.. Had so many errors there for a while, didn't know what to search for.. Will see what comes up now and go from there...  Download is now working. Next will try to tackle the Menus not showing up ..  --Mitch

Random Pic's fixed now.  Cardinal Sin.. I did two upgrades before one was fully debugged.  Put the right code in and some blocks seem to work better.. or at all..  :uglystupid2:

Still have the problem with the "menu" setup for Members Info and the rightbar, centerbar, left bar entries.  I did several searches on that and did find where some had to remove a block of code.  I tried that, but still didn't get rid of the errors.  Any suggestions would be appreciated... I will keep digging...

Mitch,

It looks a lot better than it did the last time I looked. ;)

You might try setting your Forum's default theme to the SMF default core theme (theme=1) to debug these errors.  Once the errors no longer appear then you can switch back to the custom theme and work on that.  You could let your members know that the custom theme will be back as soon as you finish the bug squashing.

Thanks Zar,

Yes I have most of it back online.  Can't seem to get the "Menu" block back up yet. I did as you suggested, set to default core theme and now get a different error:

8: Use of undefined constant thumb - assumed 'thumb'
File: /home/usscalem/public_html/forums/Themes/default/languages/Aeva.english.php (tp_above sub template - eval?)
Line: 15

The other errors about leftbar, centerbar and rightbar only occure in my modofied Blueskies theme...

So where would I look to clear up those?

The thumb error is likely from a link or something in your index.template.php file. If you can Enable eval() (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=290186.0) it will give a proper filename for the error. If it does point to a different file, attach the file here so we can look at it.

Mitch,

Honestly, I don't know what to tell you on this.  I remember helping you out when you were editing the BlueSkies theme but I can't recall if you started out using theme as it was written for TP 0.9.8 or whether you started editing the SMF 1.1.x version.  What you might do is try downloading the current version of the theme and trying it out on your site just to see if you still have those errors.  If the errors don't show up, you could consider editing the new version for your site.  If you want to try the new version, it's located here on Bloc's theme site --> http://www.blocweb.net/index.php?action=bwgallery;design=20

If you haven't already done so, it might be worthwhile to register at Bloc's theme site (http://www.blocweb.net/index.php) and ask him about these specific errors when using SMF 1.1.11 and TP 1.0 beta 5-1 as you are.  The other thing is to consider is whether it's time for a change.  When I say a change, I mean a big change, like SMF 2.0 RC3 and the latest TinyPortal.  There are lots of really nice themes that have been designed to work with this version though BlueSkies is not one of them.  The thing you would have to decide is whether you are ready for a change like that, mainly because a lot of your custom code blocks and current SMF Mods won't work with it.  The good thing is that many SMF Mods and some of the code snippets have been modified to work with the new version.  This is something I am getting ready to do with one of my sites.  The best way to decide would be to clone your database and setup a test site with it so that you can use the test site to upgrade to the latest SMF and try it out.  This way, your members wouldn't even have to know that you are trying out the new versions for a possible major upgrade in the future.

Thanks Ichbin and ZarPrime.  I am thinking it is time to do that.  The theme I use really does not matter as long has I can get the color scheme close and banner up like I have.  I should renew my theme subscription...

I will try what you suggested Ichbin and start looking at  a complete upgrade.  I am almost thinking it would be worth it to get a clean install going with a close of the DB...

Thanks again, I have to say this is one of the best support sites out there...
