When creating an Article in HTML it will only except 507 characters.
I also can't save panel options when editing a article category.
This bad because I have over 50 articles.. If I edit any of them I lose the article.
I suspect it's a database issue.
I just uninstalled what mods I could and deleted all SMF and TP files. Installed everything fresh minus the database. All files are as they were from the packages. Unedited by me.

I setup a new empty database, installed SMF 2.0rc3 and TP 1.0b5-1, and still seeing the character limit for html articles.
as far as i know there has always been a limit on the size of articles.. going back to the early releases of TP
however there was a hack out thewre to increase the limit (yes theres still a limit) by changing the type of the field that the article is stored in in the database.
this limit is and has always been there because its stored in the DB and not as a file.
There is a limit.. but I'm getting truncated at 507 or so characters. That's hardly a simple paragraph.
Up until a week ago I was running smf 1.x and 0.98 of TP. I have over 50 articles that are several paragraphs in length with 4000+ characters.
strange .. I've just checked articles on my site and they all look fine ( a lot are lot more than 507 characters)
all imported from TP 0.98 and earlier up through every revision.
also 507 characters is an odd number.. is it ALL articles stopping at 507 characters. or is it vairing lengths
There is a limit to the size of articles (something just over 64,000 characters). I don't know the exact number but it's a lot more than 507. And BlueSteel is correct. This can be increased by changing the field type in the database. I've never seen a problem like what you are describing. Can you please attach a file containing one of your articles to your next post so that I can try it on my test site.

Via phpMyAdmin I copied the text from my backup database for an article and copied into the same place in the new database and it took all the text.
So I'm not sure it's a database problem.
I think there is a problem in the article system.
A virgin database, clean default install of SMF and TP, and nothing else. It will not commit an article longer than a few sentences long. It's gets truncated ending with �.
Attached is the text (basic HTML) for an article that successfully worked in TP0.98.
I just looked at something else..
The text is getting truncated at the first " ' " (apostrophe) that appears in the article. For example in the attached text above it's the word "I'm".
Why I didn't pick up on this yesterday is beyond me...
I can't duplicate this on my site. The article works fine ...

My suggestion would be to try uploading and overwriting the TP files from TP 1.0 beta 5-1 again, and if that doesn't work, you might have to go through a manual install to make sure everything from beta 5-1 got installed correctly. The apostrophe issue you mention was a problem in several earlier Alphas, and could have slipped into the first public beta 5. If the install for beta 5-1 didn't work correctly, you could still have this from the original install.

I setup a test site last night. Nothing used or imported from my live site. Clean fresh install of SMF and TP. No other mods or custom edits.
New database, New SMF, New TP. (latest versions, downloaded last night)
Basically what I'm seeing is that the system is choking on special characters. On my live site and test site.
I don't know what to tell you. If you can give us some specific examples of special characters that you are having trouble with, maybe Bloc can look into it. BTW, what is the default Forum Language for yor Forum? On SMF RC3, you can find that by going to Admin --> Configuration --> Languages. If is is set to anything other than English ISO, trying making that the Default and see if that helps.

English ISO-8859-1 is the only language installed.
Three characters I'm seeing that it's choking on is " ââ,¬â,,¢ " " ââ,¬â€œ " " , "

Article works fine on my test site also ZP.
I have very simular problem: after migrating from TP 0.98+SMF 1.11 to TP 1.05-1+SMF 2RC3 I can't edit my articles. If I try, then after I click "Save" button, acticle truncates to 5-10-100 chars ending with �. That is really annoying: I have to work in phpmyadmin and you know, it's not very handy.
Moreover, some articles that worked nice in 0.98 can't be inserted to database even with phpmyadmin: for some reason the "body" column of smf_tp_articles table is the "text" type now (was longtext) so the article cant go in.
In addition. I tryed to create not HTML but BBC article and it is still the same: after saving all I have is 3 lines ending with �.
I upgraded from 1.1.11/0.98 to rc3/1.0b5-1 as well.
But I have a test site that has a virgin database and clean install with the same problem...
If I could also lend my weight to this topic, I am also having similar problems.
Ok I got tired and did some investigating.
The problem is that htmlentities function breaks some UTF characters. What helped me:
1. In TSubs.php find
return htmlentities(strip_tags($value),ENT_QUOTES);
and replace with
return htmlentities(strip_tags($value),ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8');
2. In TPortalAdmin.php find
tp_query("UPDATE " . $tp_prefix . "articles SET " . $setting . " = '" . mysql_real_escape_string(htmlentities($newvalue,ENT_QUOTES)) . "' WHERE id='" . $where . "' LIMIT 1", __FILE__, __LINE__);
and replace with
tp_query("UPDATE " . $tp_prefix . "articles SET " . $setting . " = '" . mysql_real_escape_string(htmlentities($newvalue,ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8')) . "' WHERE id='" . $where . "' LIMIT 1", __FILE__, __LINE__);
Note: my base is in UTF. If your base is not UTF, you have chances to get some weird results.

Sounds like a fix lol :) I'll check on the function, and see if utf setting is indeed needed here.

In the RC1 release this issue isn't solved yet and I have to change the TPortalAdmin.php in order to save long articles.
Is there an other fix for this?

Which issue are you referring to? Just the length of the articles, or the strange characters? Can you please post the exact code from your article that isn't saving correctly so that we can test it on one of our test sites? Please post the code with your next reply using the bbc code tags (#).

Oops, I refer to the article lenght. However, at the same time it's also an strange character issue.
Let me explain.
The length of the article is limited when I update or post an article. The only strange character is the last one of the limited article. All Ã,½ or ë characters or correct.
After I edit the TPortalAdmin.php (as suggested by NCKerm) and when I update the limited article the Article is complete but some characters like ë of Ã,½ are now � characters.

Dat gezin had een oproep geplaatst in dit tijdschrift en kregen toen van 12 mensen een melding die ook deze ziekte hadden. Ik heb deze 12 mensen aangeschreven en een bijeenkomst georganiseerd en hierbij kwam het idee om een patienten vereniging op te richten. Na een jaar van wisselende klachten begon de huisarts te vermoeden dat ik misschien ms had. Weer naar een andere neuroloog en na een mri bleek dat ik syringomyelie had. Een half jaar later kwamen er ook andere klachten bij zoals pijn in mijn armen en bovenlichaam. Toen begon voor mij het proces van accepteren, leren leven met pijn, welke medicijnen, stoppen met werken en hoe ga ik hiermee allemaal om? Omdat de artsen erg lang hebben gezocht naar de oorzaak heeft de veroorzakende schimmel een hoop schade in het ruggenmerg kunnen aanrichten. Toch is na het wegnemen van de schimmel mijn loopfunctie volledig teruggekeerd. De medische verklaring hiervoor is dat het lichaam alternatieve wegen heeft gezocht voor het transport van het hersenvocht. Hoe het ook zij, ik kon weer lopen!<BR><BR></FONT></P>

Ik kreeg meer last met lopen, mijn linker been begon spastisch te worden en het gevoel in armen en benen werd minder. Ik ben diverse keren in het revalidatiecentrum geweest, zowel klinisch als poliklinisch. Ik heb daar veel aan gehad, vooral de manier waarop je beweegt en wat je met fysiotherapie kunt verbeteren. </FONT></P>

Ik ging met krukken lopen, ik had een rollator nodig en de laatste jaren (rond 2000) kon ik niet meer zonder steun opstaan. Steeds vaker werd een rolstoel gebruikt en iedereen zag aankomen dat mijn loopfunctie helemaal zou wegvallen. Dat gebeurde in 2002. Een dwarslaesie op niveau T7 als gevolg van Syringomyelie. Ik kan mijn benen helemaal niet meer gebruiken. Wel heb ik nog gevoel onder het laesieniveau, maar wel verminderd. Mijn armfunctie is goed, maar ik heb wel veel last van zenuwpijn in mijn rechterarm als gevolg van een kleine syring in de nek. <BR></FONT></P>

Kennis van de aandoening, maar ook kennis van de symptomen en manieren om daarmee om te gaan. Een voorbeeld hiervan is chronische pijn. Hoe bouw je een leven op als je elke dag pijn hebt? Dat valt niet mee, maar het kan wel. Ik hoop dat ik daar een belangrijke rol in kan en mag spelen. Ook hoop ik mij in te zetten bij activiteiten, informatiemarkten en het goed laten functioneren van de vereniging. Hmmmm, It looks like i have found a way to correct this limited article and strange character behaviour.
What I have done is changed the htmlentities into htmlspecialchars in the TPortaladmin.php file
I have changed htmlentities in this line:
tp_query("UPDATE " . $tp_prefix . "articles SET " . $setting . " = '" . htmlentities($newvalue,ENT_QUOTES) . "' WHERE id='" . $where . "' LIMIT 1", __FILE__, __LINE__);
into htmlspecialchars
tp_query("UPDATE " . $tp_prefix . "articles SET " . $setting . " = '" . htmlspecialchars($newvalue,ENT_QUOTES) . "' WHERE id='" . $where . "' LIMIT 1", __FILE__, __LINE__);
Now I have only one problem and that is I really don't know anything of php programming so I don't know if I did something really stupid.
But is seems to work as it should work.
That should be ok. Both functions do the same thing, only they behave a little differently and have a few different options.

But would you expect that htmlentities($newvalue,ENT_QUOTES) will limit the article size and htmlspecialchars($newvalue,ENT_QUOTES) not?
If yes, shouldn't the preferred code be htmlspecialchars($newvalue,ENT_QUOTES)?

I would not. I also wonder if it has something to do with the editor causing problems.
