Title: help with download module
Post by: wiredgeorge on March 18, 2010, 01:00:34 PM
I run a small forum. We have TP Downloads module installed. We recently changed hosting companies and for whatever reason, the tp-downloads directory lost a number of files which had been available to our forum members for downloading. I ftp'd the files to the directory tp-downloads but they don't re-associate with the database entries that show up in the DOWNLOADS directory on the forum.  Where is the link to the tp-downloads directory set within the forum software? I can't find it under the DOWNLOADS MANAGER suite. Thanks. The path had been .../forum/tp-downloads

Hi wiredgeorge,

Welcome to TinyPortal.

We need to have a little more information about your Forum in order to help you.    Could you Please Read and Follow the Posting Guidelines (http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php/topic,581).  There is a posting template in that topic that you will need to fill out and include in your original post.

This statement caught my eye.  Is your forum no longer at YourSite.com/forum/index.php?  Once I see the information requested in the Posting Guidelines, that should give us the answer to this question.

OOPS... Let's try again... path to images:

http://www.wgcarbs.com/forum/tp-downloads

There are quite a few files that have not made it back into the TinyPortals Downsloads area of the forum but appear in the directory listing in the tp-downloads directory. Take this file:

Kawasaki kz750twin 78 full with 80and 81 sup.zip

I ftp'd it into the tp-downloads directory yesterday and it doesn't show up as a submission.

OK, it's possible that the paths for your Forum are not correct after the move from one host to another.  It might be a good idea to run repair_settings.php

Read this ---> What is repair_settings.php? (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=663.0)

See if that fixes the problem.  If not, LMK.  If that doesn't solve the problem, I might need to take a look at site from inside.

I was afraid of that.  I no longer have a TP 0.98 test site online so I may not be the best one to help on this.  LMK what happens when you run repair_settings.php and, if that doesn't fix it, I will register on your site.  After I do that, I will post back here and you can make me an Admin so that I can look inside.  Normally I'd just let you setup a temp Admin account and PM me the login details but since you don't yet have 5 posts here and can't yet send a PM, the best way would be for me to register and have you Admin me.  Then I can take a look at it.

The fella who hosts my forum & business website tells me he just ran the repair script and nothing changed; all appeared OK as far as paths go. Please register for the forum and I will make you an admin. I will not get to it until tomorrow AM early as I have a Bible study this evening. Thanks! wg

wiredgeorge,

OK, I've looked at your downloads and it does indeed appear that some are missing.  Have you verified that all of the files that are supposed to be in the tp-downloads folder on your site are indeed there?  For instance, it says that you should have 8 files in the "Reference Data" category but only one seems to show up.  Have you verified that all 8 of the files that are supposed to be in that category are in the tp-downloads folder?

If all of the files are in the folder, this actually seems like it might be an issue with the database.  I am going to talk to a couple of other TP Team Members about this to see what they have to say about it.  We may need to have access to your cpanel (phpMyAdmin) in order to sort this out so you should be aware of that.

I will be back as soon as I find out something.

Not all files have been replaced that are referenced in the data base. I know I still have things to move but that isn't really the issue.

If you look at the TOC page:

http:www.wgcarbs.com/forum/tp-downloads

You will find this file is present:

Kawasaki kz750twin 78 full with 80and 81 sup.zip

PROBLEM

First, this was the first file I ftp'd into the directory as a member was requesting it. When I went into the Downloads Manager and click on the SUBMISSIONS tab, I don't see this file.

When I click on the ADMIN tab, I see the following (among other things):

Kawasaki Service Manuals 46

When I click on the Kawasaki Service Manual link, there are only 11 items and the Kawasaki kz750twin 78 full with 80and 81 sup.zip is not one of them.  I also see one entry that is an empty file.  How do I get the Kawasaki kz750twin 78 full with 80and 81 sup.zip to show up in the submissions and how do I get rid of the empty file reference?

Last issue and not really related directly to this immediate issue... the UPLOAD function doesn't work. It provides a function to upload and appears to be ftp-ing data but after a long time, the connection always drops and no file is uploaded. Any insight on this issue would be helpful.

I am aware of these things that you have mentioned.  I believe that some of the database fields for some of the files have somehow gotten messed up.  I have posted a topic on the Team Board to ask some of the others who are more familiar with TP 0.98 about this issue.  Please bear with me.

Ichbin is going to take a look at it as well, and he knows quite a bit more about TP 0.98 than I do.

OK, update here ...

Ichbin thinks that during your host move, either the ownership of the tp-downloads folder or the permissions of the folder and/or the files might have gotten messed up and, at this point, I tend to agree.

Using your FTP program, go the your site and look at the ownership of the tp-downloads folder and see what it says.  Also check the permissions for that folder.  Drill down into the folder and look at one of the files that's showing up correctly when you're viewing the TP Download Manager.  Check ownership and permissions on that file.  Now look at the ownership and permissions of one of the files that isn't showing up.  See if they are different.

I know that I try to make sure that ownership is my site rather than apache as this can be an issue.

Check to see what it looks like and then get back to us.  Also, after I post this, I am going to send you a PM on another issue.  Ichbin is unavailable today until late this evening so if you see this before then, get that information back to us here today and then we'll decide what to do after that.

ZP, First, thanks a bunch for your help as well as Ichbin. Next the "other issue" has been taken care of I think. Last, owner group IDs for the tp-downloads directory are 32190/32192. I think this is likely correct. The tp-downloads directory has 755 permissions and the files inside the directory are 644 FOR ALL OF THEM. This means, regardless of whether it is the files we can see or not see, file permissions are the same. Any thoughts? Thanks wg

Can you associate those user/group ID's with their names? What user does apache run as?

I will have to work through my hosting guy. I sub-lease. He is a windows guy and the server is UNIX. He will have to ask the hosting company regarding ownership of the user and group IDs. I will get back. Do the permissions seem right? 755 for tp-downloads and 644 for uploaded files?
Title: Re: help with download module
Post by: IchBin on March 23, 2010, 07:07:48 PM
I "think" that should work. Depends on some things though. If the owner of your files is different than the apache user, then this could be an issue depending on how apache is setup and if its running something like phpsuexec. If you have access to the command line I can tell you how to find this out?
Title: Re: help with download module
Post by: wiredgeorge on March 23, 2010, 07:19:06 PM
Sorry, as I said, I sublease server space. I only have access to the area set aside for my website and message forum via FTP.  The guy I lease the space from administrates via a hosting company control panel and has no command line interface capability.  He is going to put a ticket into the hosting company and have them check ownership of the user/group IDs. Will get back to this when I hear from him and I encouraged him to get a log in for this forum so he could answer directly.

They say user 32190 is jtechpro which should be correct. That is the user for the guy who hosts my forum and website. They didn't say who the group is.
Title: Re: help with download module

We still need to confirm that. We also need to confirm which user apache runs as. Here's why
Unix files system assigns permissions to files allowing users,groups, and other (which is anyone) to either read/write/execute.
If you were to look at a file you can see a number like this: 777 or 755 or 644. There are many variations. The first number is the permission that the owner has. Here's what the number can mean depending on what permissions it is giving.
4 = read
2 = write
1 = execute

If you add all those numbers together it equals 7. This means the owner has all permissions for the file. If the number is a six, you can see that they only have read and write permission. If the number is 5 they only have read and execute permission.

This is the same for group (being the second number) and other (being the 3rd number).

If apache is running as a different user than 32190 and apache is not the assigned to be the group, then the permission that apache would use is the "other". So if a file is 774 then apache cannot write or execute the file.

I hope that helps you understand. We need to know this before trying anything else out.

We need to know who the group owner of the files are, and we also need to know which user apache is running as.

Hello.

I am the host in question here. Since I only have access to cPanel, a lot of the info you are asking for is not available to me. The site is hosted through JaguarPC and I've had to go to them for answers.

I asked them the questions about group ownership and what user apache is runing under and here is their response. Maybe it will make more sense to you than it does me.

The user.group owner ships for all the files/folders inside the public_html document root of your account should be jtechpro.jtechpro which is your main Cpanel username also. The folder permisssions should be 755 and files 644.

We are running Suphp on the server ,so you cannot setup nobody owner ships for any files.

Thanks. I removed the link because not everyone needs to see that. I don't see anything wrong right away. I'm not sure I can trouble shoot this without having access to the server at this point. Is that something you want to do? If so, feel free to send me some info. At first I just need to look at the problem with an account on the forum. After that point I may need FTP and Database access.

Forum is here.

You can create your own account if you need it. If you need an admin account, I'll have to leave that up to George since it's his site.

If you need FTP access and George agrees to it, I give you that.

Ok, it looks like it's working to me. Well, at least uploading and assigning an item via the FTP tab. When you upload an item to the downloads folder, the file will be listed in the FTP tab of the downloads manager until you assign it to a download or create a new download with it. When you assign it to a category, it looks like it creates a category and download item all in one shot. It names it no-name. I renamed your kawasaki file you mentioned at the first of this topic. It then showed the file in the FTP tab of the DL admin. I then assigned that download to the Kawasaki category. I had to rename and move the download out of the no-name category. But it works. So... I guess the question is can you try it again and let me know what happens for you? :)

If you still have items not showing up in the FTP tab, and need to assign some files to other downloads, I'd suggest renaming them slightly and then assigning them again. It looks like you have a little bit of work ahead though. :)

Let me know if you get stuck or have any problems.

Ichbin & Zarprime... the solution that Ichbin proposed works. I went in and renamed one of the previously uploaded .zip files and it showed up in the FTP area. I added it to the group and it set it in the "unnamed" area within that group and then edited to add an image and name it and actually place it in the group. Many thanks! wg

Sweet. Glad there's at least a work around for you. :) I'll go ahead and marked this solved if you haven't already.

wiredgeorge,

I'm glad the fix worked.  Sometimes when you switch hosts, little quirks like this happen but it's unusual.  You can delete the account I setup if you want to, unless you think you may, at some point in the future, need for one of us to look at something else.  That's another thing that's kind of unusual.  I know of at least 4 Forums belonging to others that I have Admin accounts on but I never look at them unless someone asks me to check something.

I left your account on our forum but removed you from the admin group. In the event you need to get back in as admin, I will change you back to that group. Thanks a bunch! wg
