Is this possible? I had thought it was, or was supposed to be. I cannot find it and am banging my head on my keyboard. I am off to work. If some kind soul can point me in the right direction for this (I couldn't find it in a search), I would be most appreciative.
Thanks!! ~Marsh
Marsh,
Are you talking about Article Categories, or something else? What version of SMF? What version of TinyPortal? Can you please give us 3 examples of permissions that you want to change as I am not exactly sure of what it is you want to do?
Thanks,
ZarPrime
In TP (now beta 4), SMF 1.1.x
By Article category and membergroups. I want to have pages for this club I am in, and have it so that each member club can have 1-2 guys in their group who can edit only their article(s), but not anything else. I thought you could make it so this was possible, but I don't see how.
There are only permissions for editing articles. No permissions for categories other than read access.
YES, i want them to be able to edit JUST the articles in that category though... I suppose that won't work!? Any ideas how I can let people from like 20 clubs have access to JUST THEIR PAGES?
What kind of access? You can allow a person the permission to post/edit their own articles. You can't however choose which category they get to post them in. IMO that's the job of the Moderator or Admin to keep tabs on what categories things are organized into.
All I want to give the is access to edit their articles/page. One disgruntled (or really stupid person) person could cause a LOT of damage! I am not here 24/7 to babysit... guess I'll have to come up w/ something else--I just cannot give that many people permission to edit articles in general.
You do not give them permission to edit all articles (manage articles). You give them permission to edit only "their" articles. These permissions already exist.
and, here we go... I (or staff) set these club articles up for them. These people are not computer literate. So, now there's no way to make that work, right?!
Sorry Marsh, I'm not following.
Okay. We have a club, it's a WWI reenactment society. In this, there are about 40 individual clubs. I have built the site and made the individual club pages already. What I (and webteam) want, is for the individual clubs to be able to edit the pages we set for them, but not fool w/ any other club's page (which some would) or mess up any of the rest of the site, which is all SMF/TP articles.
ok, yeah the permissions aren't that detailed. Sorry.
I had thought they were. >:-( Don't know why I did. Any suggestions on how to make something like that work?
Not if you're dealing with people you can't trust to do the right thing.
I learned the hard way, a long time ago, you cannot trust people. You can trust dogs. You can even trust cats, but people... no. Never!
Well, if I were you I'd find some people that you can at least trust to proof read and manage articles. You could then setup articles so that only certain groups can submit, but they can't approve. Then you regulate what articles go where during the approval process. This is after all, why it was made that way. :)
Marsh,
I can't recall anyone other than you ever asking for the ability to specify article permissions by Category. I know that nobody on the TP Team, including Bloc, has ever foreseen a need for something like this. As Ichbin says, it really is a trust issue. If you can't trust someone to do the right thing on your site, they really shouldn't have any permissions for working with articles anyway, IMHO.
In TinyPortal 1.0 beta 5, granting permissions for various TP functions has been split from the main SMF permissions and should be easier to work with (see attached image). You will be able to specify a membergroup that will have all article permissions, sort of like an Article SuperAdmin, but this person or persons should still only be your most trusted associates.
If this is something you'd really like to see in a future version of TinyPortal, I recommend that you post a feature request in The Feedback Board (http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?board=15.0), as this would be the place that Bloc would look when planning features for future versions. However, at this point, it is really too late to get something like this in beta 5.

@IchBin: I should ask HOW does one set the upload to work AND will they have the control panel to edit? (I have it using FCKEditor through a nice mod by Dragooon).
The upload of the article? Not sure what you're talking about.
A control panel to edit what? The article I'm assuming? What do you mean by control panel, the editor? Well, if you want the FCKeditor, that is not an option you'll have if you upgrade unless you get the mod to work that Dragoon made you.
How does one use the upload feature? It's something I never mess w/ as I have no need.
When they upload an article, is it just them uploading a file, or is there a place for them to write it, using the editing tools TP has.
I DO have the FCKEditor running there.
They enter an article the same way an admin does, using the editor if it's an html/bbc article. Only if they don't have approval permission, it puts the article in the submissions area for an admin or another group with approval permission to review and approve. During the review the person can change the article category or information if necessary.
I'll try it w/ one of my test log-ins.
