With the release of the new latest beta versions of Tinyportal. Has the old version 0.9.8 been dropped completely? I can't find it in the downloads section any more.
Also, might just be me (and not wanting to sound rude) but I'm finding this site a bit confusing to find various things for 0.9.8 now. A lot of the themes for download don't mention what version of tinyportal they'll run on, and seem to only mention the SMF version.
I assume this is because the latest version of TP doesn't need the SMF themes converted.
Been a while since I was online, but as far as i know you are on the right track, dropping tpv098 when the new tp got release was something the team discussed.
So if the package are missing ( have some reading back to do my self right now here ) it was probably removed as it's no longer supported.
Why it's not supported are quite easy, to much work to support and keep updates to for themes etc.
Bloc removed tpv098 from download , not sure if it's supported here??
..but i still convert a few of my own theme's for 098 users ..
TP v.0.9.8 is very different from the v1.0 betas, both in features and certainly in coding. And now, with v1.0beta5 supporting SMF 2.xx that difference is even bigger.
Thats why that version isn't available for download any longer, and support for it is diminishing, not at least because not many here actually know it well now. (I need to look up things too, its been *that* many years lol)

Thanks for the replies guys. ;)
The bit that confuses me is there's only beta versions for download. The fact that they are beta versions means they are not the finished product, and released to the public for testing.
I find it strange that the old release has been dropped before the new one is out of beta, I've never seen that before.
Guess my next step is to upgrade to the latest release, but will I be able to run the themes I have already, or will they all have to be re-modded to work? I've been holding this off until SMF 2 Coppemine 1.5 (when released) and TP v1 all play nice together.
Themes for TP.098 will not work correctly with any TP beta's , you simply get the very same theme that's *not* converted and and they will all work , you only need to add a [Forum] buton : ', $txt['tp-forum'], ' & that is it..

We may have said that TP 0.9.8 is the most stable version, but I don't think we have ever called it a final release. TinyPortal has ALWAYS been in beta. Even 0.9.8 is a beta release.
Oh, v0.9.8 was very much a beta too lol, the reason for its 0.9 numbering was exactly the same as current v1.0 betas: to reach a stable v1.0 final.
It was NEVER my intention of having v0.9 being a sort of "stable" release, but as this is a project thats getting a few years old now, the actual jumps in features/coding from v0.9 to v1.0 beta have been bigger than most I guess.

Yup but for some strange reason (i've noticed that on our site as well) people seem to think TP 0.9 is/was a stable version and all seem to be afraid to update to TP 1.0 b(whatever) :)
We used to use 0.9.8 and then upgraded to TinyPortal v1.0.5 beta 1 which for some reason I see as stable lol. I guess as long as it works...

lol, that sounds exactly like me.
Thanks all for the replies, I never noticed that 0.9.8 was still beta. Maybe to save confusion (mine especially :embarrassed: ) The word beta should be dropped when each version gets to certain build.
I'll look at building a test site, and see if I can cobble everything together. O0
That was strange... my last reply doesn't have the text I typed. :o
I think you typed it into the quote you made...
People think that 0.98 is stable because the versions after it all say "Beta" even in the copyright. 0.98 does not.

Yeah, I skimmed it last time and missed that. lol Thanks!
lurkalot, if you really need it I have a copy. But I am unsure whether the moderators here allow me to upload it.
William,
We really don't want to have versions of TinyPortal passed around that are not available for download here. There are a few other reasons why Bloc removed it besides the fact that it's just plain too old but I don't care to elaborate on that. Only a few of the TP Team even still have a TP 0.98 test site available to test things. I, for one, no longer even have a TP 0.98 site. As a matter of fact, when TP 1.0 beta 5 is finally released and someone asks a support question about TP 0.98, it is likely that our first response will be that it is no longer supported and that they should upgrade to beta 5.
If someone wants to continue to use TP 0.98 on their site that's fine but support for it will be hard to come by in the future, and from this point forward. ;)

Thanks for the offer. I'm sure I have it somewhere on one of my drives so that's not a problem. My reason for starting the thread in the first place was to do with the word Beta. And why the old version was dropped when the new version is still Beta. This has now been answered further back in this thread. ;)
