Title: Articles and Intro
Post by: shane is my name on February 26, 2010, 09:22:43 AM
Im just messing around with everything and I put an article on my frontpage...

Im trying to set it to have a small image to the left, and then text floating right of the image...   and then if people want to read more about that article, they go to READ MORE... and it will pull up the rest of the article.

I thought I could do this with using "Intro"?  but when i put an image in the intro section (wether i insert an image via url or if i use the quick image option) it only displays the code when i view the forum.   - yes i made sure im in html mode ... FYI: the main article area displays the image correctly. its just the intro section...

- im using  tp 1 beta 4
- smf 1.1.10

Shane,

Please post the code you are using in the main article and the code you are using in the intro so that we can see what it looks like.  Please surround the code for both sections in code tags here using the "#" button on the posting page.  I'll check it and try it on my test site.

Thanks for helping   :)

I just did another real quick test...
Here is the test code for the Main article:
<P><IMG style="BORDER-BOTTOM: 0px solid; BORDER-LEFT: 0px solid; MARGIN: 0px; BORDER-TOP: 0px solid; BORDER-RIGHT: 0px solid" alt=testing align=left src="http://hiphopforums.org/attach/testmain.jpg">XXXXXXXXXXX MAINXXXXXXXXXXXXX</P>
<P>TESTING </P>
<P>TESTING</P>
<P>TESTING</P>
<P>TESTING</P>
<P>TESTING</P>
<P>TESTING MAIN MAIN MAIN MAIN</P>
<P>aaaaaaaaaaa</P>
<P>bbbbbbbbbbb</P>

and here is the test code for the Intro code
<P><IMG style="BORDER-BOTTOM: 0px solid; BORDER-LEFT: 0px solid; MARGIN: 0px; BORDER-TOP: 0px solid; BORDER-RIGHT: 0px solid" alt=testing align=left src="http://hiphopforums.org/attach/testintro.jpg">XXXXXXXXXXX&nbsp;INTRO &nbsp;XXXXXXXXXXXXX</P>
<P>TESTING </P>
<P>TESTING</P>
<P>TESTING</P>
<P>TESTING</P>
<P>TESTING</P>
<P>TESTING INTRO INTRO INTRO INTRO</P>
<P>aaaaaaaaaaa</P>
<P>bbbbbbbbbbb</P>

and when I view my forum to see the intro, It just displays the code..  see attached image..  (however let me point out that if i do NOT use the intro, then my article will display an image properly)

Shane,

OK, I put the article on the FP of my test site and it shows the intro there with a "...Read More" link.  It shows the white devil rat on the FP as expected.  When you click the link, it takes you to the actual main article page, which shows the pretty little green eyed lady.  BTW, what a cute cat that is.  It would probably look better if I turned the panels off when viewing the main page but you get the idea.  It works.  See it here and look down the page for the title "Shane Test" ...

Shane, I can't imagine why you are having so many troubles getting your Forum to work like this.  Actually going in and looking at your site is normally the last thing that I do but this time it might be the right thing to do.  If you want to setup a temp Admin account (with full Admin access) and PM me the details, I'll go in and try to duplicate the effort above on your site and see what happens.  When you PM the details to me be sure to use this Format ...
Site url
Username
Password

Don't post that information here for public view, just PM me the details.

I'm so sorry.  I didn't realize it was a ferret, probably because I just didn't look at it that closely.  That's funny. ;D

OK, I'm getting ready to check PM's now and take a look at your site.  We'll hope for the best.

Shane,

OK, I've looked at your site and I think I see why this is happening.

I had thought that you had placed your code in an html block rather than in an html article.  As it turns out, you have the article setup correctly and if you view the article itself on the Front Page rather than having the FrontPage go straight to the Forum, the Intro shows up fine.  However, what you did was to create a block containing the article (block type = Single Article).  When you do this, it seems that it disables the ability to use the intro and the code in the intro is not parsed correctly.  This causes the block to show the code instead of the result.

I looked in the bugtracker for this but I didn't see any mention of this there.  This could either be because the ability to show an intro in a single article block was overlooked in TP 1.0 beta 4 or it could be that the block was never meant to show the article intro.  I will have to ask about this on the Team Board to see what the answer to this is.  In the meantime, I will also check to see if single article blocks show the intro correctly in the soon to be released TP 1.0 beta 5.  In any case, even if it works correctly in beta 5, it will not likely be fixed for beta 4.

As soon as I get an answer on this, I will post back here.

Shane,

OK, good news and bad news.

First off, congratulations, you found a bug in 1.0 beta 4 though it may have been spotted before.  I asked about this on the Team Board and Bloc responded as shown below ...

WRT this topic ---> http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=31976.0

Shane has an html article with an html intro.  On his site, when showing the article on the FrontPage, the intro shows correctly, as it should.  However, if he uses a "single article" type block to show the article (like in the upper panel), the code for the intro is not parsed correctly (see attached image).

I'm trying to figure out if this is by design (in other words, the intro is not supposed to be used when viewing the article with a single article block) or whether this might be a bug in beta 4.  Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

and, from Bloc ...

Its a bug alright. One of the reasons I wanted to rewrite that part from beta4 to beta5. Too many things are done on-the-spot instead of following a general routine, thats the gist of it.

So, bottom line, this is one of the things that Bloc has rewritten for beta 5.  That's the good news.  At this point, it won't be fixed for beta 4.  That's the bad news.  In beta 4, you can still show the article on your FrontPage by choosing to show Articles on your Front Page instead of going straight to the Forum.  Or you could use a standard html block with the code in it for both the main content and the intro.

Thanks for checking out my site and explaining in details for me.

Quotestandard html block with the code in it for both the main content and the intro.

Wouldn't that display everything at once? (both the intro and the main content, instead of just an intro that links to main content)?

Ok, thanks again, I'm off to experiment with the articles!   :)

I'm sorry.  Let me back up a second.

If you show the single article in a block, the intro for the single article will be ignored.  In other words, it won't be shown in the block.  Only the main content will be shown in the block.  This is because the intro content is designed only to be shown on the Front Page when using the article system.  Blocks don't have the ability to show an intro.

So let me rephrase how this works.  If you have an article that has an intro and Main content, and you choose to show the article on the front page, the intro will be shown and will have a "Read More" link.  When you click "Read More" you will be taken to the article page where the main content will be shown.  If you have a single article type block, that block will show only the Main content (No Intro).

You can see this in beta 5 on our TP backup site here --> http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?theme=1

Articles are shown on the FP so you see the intro with the Ferret.  If you click "Read More" you will be taken to the article page showing the Main content with the cat.  Now if you click "Home" on the menu to go back to the FP, and scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, you'll see the single article, except only the cat is shown (no ferret).

I hope this explains it a little better.

Oh ok i get it now..

QuoteThis is because the intro content is designed only to be shown on the Front Page when using the article system.  Blocks don't have the ability to show an intro.

sorry i was a little slow...
ok thanks. :)
