Title: Question about upgrade
Post by: VagLin on December 07, 2009, 06:40:44 PM
Hi all.

I am using versions 1.1.11 and 0.9.8 for SMF and TinyPortal respectively. As you can see, this is the latest version for SMF. But, which is the latest version for TinyPortal and how can I upgrade it? Please, give me detailed instructions about the steps I have to follow cause I am a newabe... I have to follow manually steps or there is any automatic way? I am afraid of doing any mistake which will lead in a software crash!

Kind regards,
CrazyVag.

The latest version of TP is TP1 beta4. You can download it by going to the download menu link at the top of the forum. You then install it by uninstalling TP 0.9.8. Then installing it through the package manager. You will not lose any data as it's all stored in the database.
How do I Install TinyPortal? (http://docs.tinyportal.co.uk/index.php?topic=28)

Remember to make a backup of both your forum files and database before you start in case you run into any trouble.

Thanks in advance,

Because those items aren't modifying any existing files.
It's only where the package manager is having to modify an existing file, that a description is given, and that's simply to say that it should install ok by stating 'Test Succesful', or that it has found a problem, where it would say 'Test Unsuccesful'.

Looking at that, everything should install ok.

Okay guys! TinyPortal v1.0 beta 4 was succesfully installed! One more question please. I would like to ask you in regards to some error messages that appear due to the tiny portal modification. I am using TinyPortal v1.0 beta 4 plus SMF 1.1.11. The attached image shows the error messages as they appear in the "Forum Error Log" section of SMF forum. Whats the problem and how can I fix it?

Kind regards,
Vag.

VagLin,

Welcome to TinyPortal and good job on the upgrade.

Doing a search on any one of those errors (fclose, for instance) would have found the answer for you.  Have a look at this topic ...

Those errors are associated with RSS feeds and indicate that your host has FOpen disabled on your site.

Hi ZarPrime!

Indeed, this problem - seems that - has to do with RSS feeds. First, I had added a rss block in the front page (rss.block.png), but then, ÃŽâ,,¢ noticed that after disabling it (left.panel.blocks.png), no errors occur. At the same time, the rss feeds service still works! So, is it expected or did I miss  something? And one more thing: Which is the usage of the rss block in the front page (sorry about this stupid question)?

VagLin,

The ability of your site to generate an RSS feed is not affected by this.  What is affected is your ability to show an RSS feed from another site.  If the RSS block is blank, as shown in your top image in the previous post, this is a pretty good indication that a directive in your core php config called "allow_url_fopen" has been turned off.

You can verify this by uploading the file attached to this link to your root folder on your site ...
http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=31373.msg251177#msg251177

Once you have uploaded this file, you simply run it by typing your main site url in your browser address bar and appending the following to the url ...
/info.php

For instance, if your main site is http://MySite.com then you will put the following in your address bar and hit enter ...
http://MySite.com/info.php

Once the page opens, if you look down at the second line under PHP Core, you should see a line "allow_url_fopen" as shown in the attached image.  If that line says "Off" instead of "On" then your host has disabled this ability.  In this case, in order for you to receive and show RSS feeds from other sites, your host will need to enable this for you.

On your last question ~ "Which is the usage of the rss block in the front page (sorry about this stupid question)?", once your host has turned this directive "On" you should be able to receive and Show RSS feeds properly.  As far as what the usage is, there are various reasons for having RSS feeds on your site.  Have a look at the FrontPage of my test site ...
http://talesofthehavenexpanse.com/smf1test/index.php

There are various RSS feeds on there, including a feed from Twitter and several feeds containing pictures.  Feeds like this should all work once your host has enabled the "allow_url_fopen" directive for your site.

allow_url_include is another setting that needs to be on.
