both errors seem to be related, as they point to the same line. any ideas?

Have you checked when does the error occur? If you find the page that the error occurs on you can have a clue as to where to look. You can disable any custom blocks or articles to see if they are causing it.
well as this seems to have been hit a lot by "guest" its difficult to say what page causes it
I have a very simple TP setup and use it really for front page only. on the front page is a single welcome article and a custom php block. I also have an article for "About us" and that's it
having looked at the code on line 15 of the TPortal.template.php file, the problem seems to lie with the fact that $context['TPortal']['boardnews'] is not defined within the foreach() loop it is referenced
as I don't have any "boardnews" (or whatever this refers to), the code in that section of the template seems somewhat redundant
Therefore I have copied the template to my phobos theme folder and added the following conditional statement around it
if(isset($context['TPortal']['boardnews'])) {.... }
I will keep an eye on the error log and see how it goes
