Title: Having trouble setting default profile settings...
Post by: lextalionis on October 23, 2009, 08:20:40 PM
Right now all new members, moderators, even admins. have to manually check the quick reply in their profile.  I want to turn this on for all accounts by default.

Link to my site: http://www.motleypixel.com
SMF version: SMF ver. 1.1.9
TP version: TP ver. 1.0 beta 4
Theme name and version: Black Rain
Browser Name and Version: IE 7.0.5730.10
Mods installed: TPReviews, iFrame, YouTube, Ads Management (all current for SMF 1.1.9)
Related Error messages:  Can't turn on quick-reply for all accounts by default.

Going to Themes and Layout Settings, Overall forum default is Black Rain and the when I drop-down the Reset everyone to: and select Black Rain and click Save it doesn't enable this on all accounts.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Roy

Thats not reallt a TP support question,
You have to ask on SMF www.simplemachines.org

Okay thanks I'll ask them, but it's been answered and I followed procedure and it's not working.  It's either something quirky with the theme and/or TP and/or user error.

Thanks,
Roy

First question, does Black Rain have a quick reply option?
(I'm guessing it does, but best to check the obvious first!)

I'm guessing that Quick Reply was not originally set to show by default for the theme, which means that all the users would of been set for it not to show, and that setting set in {dbpefix}themes (it stores settings that are specific to users, and themes, along with the default theme options)
Only way I can think to change that, would be to alter all the settings within {dbprefix}themes for individual users on that theme, so it is set to show.

Yes it has the setting in the user's profile, look and layout preferences.

So I need to build a mysql query to insert/update the right default theme option for quick reply?  Not really a problem if I knew what to change.

Thanks for the help.

Can you access your db via phpmyadmin (or similar)?

If you look at the themes table, you'll see it has 4 fields - ID_MEMBER, ID_THEME, variable, and value.

Anything with ID_MEMBER set as 0, is the default settings (this is where default theme options are stored).
Then anything with an ID_MEMBER value of anything other than 0, is specific to that user id, and overides the default values.

You'd need to find out what number your ID_THEME is for Black Rain (either via the theme changing links, or by filtering the 'variable' field to only show 'name' and finding what the ID_THEME is for Black Rain).
Then find what 'variable' name is used to store whether Quick Reply should be shown or not.

Once you've got that info, the required SQL update statement shouldn't be too hard to build.
You can either update all existing records to set it to show, or remove all existing records, so it then displays it as default (provided you've already altered the default so that it shows).

Other option, is you edit the theme, so that the quick reply always shows (ie. remove the settings check)

Yes I have phpmyadmin access and am familiar with it, but isn't your last statement "Other option, is you edit the theme, so that the quick reply always shows (ie. remove the settings check)" a more permanent option?

Thanks,
Roy

Editting the theme, is always a more permanent option.
It all depends on if you need the ability for users to select whether quick reply is shown or not...

Okay thank you for the help...I feel quick reply for default w/o option to turn if off is better than not having it on as some may never know to enable it.

Thanks,
Roy

You can reset those options in each theme under the theme settings for SMF. THere's no need to run a SQL query to change that. Unless I read you guys wrong.. Got a bit confused. :(

I would of thought you could, and I also assumed that that had been suggested over on the SMF boards...

Any chance of a link to the thread on SMF?

Well I'm a bit confused too, but essentially I "think" I've tried everything in the book to make it where/when a regular member registers and replies the very first time to a topic with replies w/o altering his/her profile the quick reply is available.

Instead, when I (forum administrator) set my profile to enable quick reply. Then to admin, themes and layouts, overall forum default is set to Black Rain and then I reset everyone to Black Rain and click Save it still doesn't enable "quick replies" for all users on the forum by default.

A good Admin would enable it on there Profile IMHO! :)

It's disabled by default for all users I think Crip. This is going to be changed in SMF2 if I remember right.
In the Themes and Settings > Reset Options section you'll find this if you click the option to "reset all members options" for which ever theme you want to edit.

Your exactly right B0ss , but i thought Roy said he had tried that?

I've just tried this on my test set-up, and I can't enable it by default.

I can't even find any options to set quick reply on as default, anywhere within the admin centre.

I can however tell you, that once you set the option within a member's profile, it is then stored in the themes table against the users id.
The theme is set to 1 - the theme I was using was id 4, however it's not a theme specific setting, so if you store the setting against theme 1 (default), then it becomes a default for all themes, unless your override it with a setting against a specific theme id.
The variable name is 'display_quick_reply', and the value is one of the following-
0 = don't show at all
1 = show, of by default
2 = show, on by default

I'm guessing this is one of the settings that has got to be hardcoded into SMF somewhere?

I've never had any reason to alter the default settings for new members, so I'm not sure where to make the changes...

Interestingly enough when I registered on smf and tp forums I never changed my profile to show quick reply, yet I'm using it as I type this.  I just need to know how to make my forum work like this too.

Thanks,
Roy

Oh, just found the setting!

admin panel -> Themes and Layout -> Reset Options

Under the default (core) theme, use Reset default (guest) options for this theme to set the default for new members, then Reset all members' current options for this theme to change the setting for existing members (the third option resets all options for existing members to the default settings)

You should really thank Ichbin, as he did mention it above.
Just that he also mentioned it along with SMF2, so I ignored it, until I done a search over on SMF.

I always thought the reset options directly reset things, and never realised they continued to other pages with more options.
