Title: Low-Tech Guy Needs Help!
Post by: paulmagno on October 14, 2009, 02:13:01 AM
HI...excuse me for the newbie questions, but I'm very new with TP and computers in general...

I want to have my front page display posts from my news website, sort of like a "What's New?" feature that could have my readers go check out my site...Can I do this with TP? How? All I seem to get is forum entries on the front page...

Also, is it possible to use TP without a front page and with customized side panels to show info I want displayed? If so, how?

We are going to need some details from you. Right now I have no clue what software you are using. Which version of SMF and TP? When you say "my news website", what is your news site? Is it a separate site with news posted to a page? Does it have an RSS feed?
When you say you want TP without a frontpage, do you want it to open the forum index instead? What do you want it to do? Panels can of course be customized. They can show anything you want pretty much. Depends on how customized you want it, which depends on what you want to put in it. If you give us as many details as possible we can most likely give you specific answers. In the future, it would help if you would follow the Posting Guidelines. Thanks

I'm sorry, like I said...I'm very new to this type of stuff...Here's my info:

* I'm using SMF 1.1.10

* I'm runing tinyportal v1.0 beta 4

* I think maybe the front page option is beyond my ability right now, so I want to see if I can just open to the forum index. I have a boxing forum and I wanted to have the front page just list news stories so my visitors could be informed of the latest boxing news before entering the forum...I guess my boxing news site doesn't have an RSS feed because I have no idea what that is...I would've had no problem manually listing the news stories on the front page...

* I wanted my panels to include a boxing betting odds widget and maybe some photos or links to other sites that are friends of the board...but I have no idea how to customize them...Is there a TP for Dummies?

I realize that for someone of your knowledge, these questions must be like a drill going through your brain, but I'm a retired old trainer learning the computer late in life. I've learned quite a bit, but TP is new to me...

Thank You for your time.

Hi paulmagno, welcome to TinyPortal.

For your forum to open directly to the forum page do this:
Admin>TinyPortal>Settings and Frontpage>Frontpage>What to display on frontpage:>Go directly to forum index (pick that option)

For the "boxing betting odds widget"... that's a completely different question. It sounds like you need a block code snippet and you can look through the ones we already have, but we likely don't have anything like that so you may need to request that one of our code specialists write one for you.
You can do that Here:
Block Code Snippets Board.html (http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php/board,46.0)
Be sure to include lots of detail about what you need and follow the posting guidelines. :)

Can you show me a link to your boxing news site? I can check it out and see if there is some way for you to pull the news to your frontpage.

If you look at that page, there is a link in the main menu. It is titled PostRSS. The link to that page is an RSS feed. An RSS feed is an XML document that can be parsed onto any other website. You can create a frontpage block and have the that block be a RSS reader. You put the link for the PostRSS on that site into your block, and it will read the feed as actual news onto your site. For more information on TinyPortal blocks and frontpage settings, you should first take a read in the docs board, and then post back if you are stuck or don't understand something.
